The estate

Bouchard Père & Fils, oft referred to as the "Grande Maison", is one of the finest names in Beaune. Among one of the oldest houses in Burgundy, Bouchard Père & Fils was founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard. In 1820, Bouchard Père & Fils moved into the magnificent Château de Beaune following the acquisition by Bertrand Bouchard of the royal 15th-century fortress built by order of Louis XI. The wines by Bouchard Père & Fils patiently age in the vaulted, deeply hidden cellars that rest beneath the Château, which encompass a treasure trove of fine bottles. The Bouchard Père & Fils House is thus behind a wide range of wines that reflect the extraordinary diversity of Burgundy's terroirs.

The vineyard

It was in the 7th century that the monks of the Abbey of Bèze created the famous Clos, currently home to the most prestigious Grand Cru in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. Poised on the 14 and a half hectares, Pinot Noir vines are rooted in a marly clay-limestone soil composed of crumbled rocks with traces of potassium, phosphorus and iron. One winemaker is entirely dedicated to working this plot. Every day, he constantly seeks the perfect balance in order to fully express the nuances of the terroir through a great Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wine.

Vinification and ageing

Following manual harvesting, the grapes are sorted and destemmed. They are then fermented in small containers with gentle pressing. The vatting period can last from 15 to 20 days and then the wine is aged for 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels.
