Description
Bollinger La Cote aux Enfants 2013 : A great red wine from Champagne
Bollinger stands out from among the most prestigious Champagne houses with its very high-end wines but also with an exceptional example of a rare Champagne red. This wine is made from grapes harvested in the legendary plot of Aÿ, La Cote aux Enfants, from vines classified Grand Cru in the Coteaux Champenois appellation. Formerly divided between fifty or so owners, the 4-hectare parcel was reunited by Joseph Bollinger in the early nineteenth century. Nicknamed the "Romanee-Conti de la Champagne," this vineyard has practiced organic farming since 2009, producing exceptional Pinot Noir in only the greatest vintages.
The 2013 Cote aux Enfants is a Pinot Noir wine made in the Burgundian style and aged for eight months in small oak barrels. The colour is garnet and the nose dominated by red fruits, elderberry and a bit of pepper. On the palate one can detect flavours consistent with the nose, a nice balance framed by a beautiful tannic structure. A lot of concentration and power in this rare wine. To be consumed in the next 5 years to taste more of a fruit-forward expression or to be left to age in the cellar for even more complexity.
