An ample and fresh red wine from Saint-Estephe

Chateau Ormes de Pez is a Cru Bourgeois produced in the Saint-Estephe appellation. The 35 hectare vineyard is planted on a terroir of sandy-gravel. The wine is matured in barrels, with 45% of them being new. The 2016 vintage is a blend of Merlot 52%,Cabernet Sauvignon 42%, Cabernet Franc 5% and Petit Verdot 1%.

The 2016 vintage was affected by a mild winter and heavy rainfall from January to March. Budding occurred early, but it was homogenous. April and May were cool and humid, slowing down development. Freezing was avoided, but mildew took advantage of sensitive plots. Flowers arrived in late May. Summer was hot and dry, with temperatures exceeding 35°C. The 11 mm of rain that accumulated from June 25th-September 13th. Harvest occurred on September 27th and lasted until October 11th

Chateau Ormes de Pez 2016 is richfine and elegant. The nose is rather fruity, with aromas of Morello cherriesblackberries and blackcurrants with a subtle note of liquorice. A full-bodied fresh wine, with silky tannins and an incredibly long finish.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2016 Les Ormes de Pez is a blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked from 28 September until 12 October. It has an impressive bouquet: blackcurrants, boysenberry and crème de cassis, all with very well integrated new oak. There is a lot of panache here, a word perhaps I have not associated with this Saint Estèphe in recent years. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a lovely grainy texture, quite pure with lovely blackberry, melted tar and slightly savory, almost meaty notes. Harmonious right to the end, this is an excellent Les Ormes de Pez that seems to revel in the 2016 vintage. This might be one of the best wines from the estate.
