Description

The harmony and aromatic richness of a fine Italian wine by Antinori

The estate

Owned by the historic Antinori family since 1995, Pian delle Vigne is located 6 km south of Montalcino, above the river Orcia and 40 km from Siena in the Tuscany region of Italy. The name of the estate stems from a typical old 19th-century railway station that is located on the estate and is still in use. A quality that only improves with time, the wines by the Antinori - Pian Della Vigne estate are renowned for their aromatic intensity, the great distinctive minerality provided by their terroir of origin and the elegance of their tannins.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Pian delle Vigne covers 184 hectares, 65 of which are vineyards, the rest is divided into olive groves and woods. The vineyard is entirely dedicated to Sangiovese, the star black grape variety known as Brunello in this area of Tuscany. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils, between 130 and 250 metres above sea level, with an excellent south-eastern exposure.

The vintage

The 2017 vintage is remembered for its hot and dry weather. These weather conditions generated an early flowering period. The rain in September enabled the vines to complete their cycle and the grapes to reach optimum ripeness before the start of the harvest.

Vinification and ageing

Following the harvest, the grapes are taken to the cellar where they are destemmed, gently crushed and transferred to stainless steel tanks in order to begin alcoholic fermentation. Maceration of the skins takes place over a period of approximately 12 days at a controlled temperature of 28 degrees. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to different-sized oak barrels, between 30 and 80 hectolitres, for a period of two years. Lastly, the wine is bottled and then aged for a long period before being put on the market.
