Description

A powerful and precise Brut champagne by Veuve Clicquot

The producer

Today, Veuve Clicquot has become a brand with worldwide success. The Veuve Clicquot myth was created thanks to a woman: Madame Clicquot. It was in 1798 that François Clicquot married the daughter of Baron Nicolas Ponsardin. Son of the founder of the Clicquot Champagne House, he passed on all of his passion to his wife, initiating her into the secrets of champagne-making. When her husband passes away prematurely, at the age of 27, she took over the running of the Veuve Clicquot Champagne House with determination. Guided by an innate sense of innovation and a perpetual quest for perfection, she invented the riddling table and marketed the first blended rosé champagne. Veuve Clicquot has turned this uncompromising requirement into her motto: "Only one quality, the finest". The Champagne House Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin pioneered a new type of marketing by housing its fabulous product in bottles graced with an orange-yellow label, first applied in 1877.

The vineyard

The Veuve Clicquot House owns 390 hectares of vines, making it one of the largest vineyards in Champagne. This vineyard boasts an exceptional quality, as it is spread over 12 out of the 17 Grands Crus and 20 out of the 44 Premiers Crus of the Champagne region.

The wine

Cave Privée Rosé 1989 is exclusively composed of wines from 25 Grands Crus and Premiers Crus of the Montagne de Reims, the Grande Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs.

The vintage

The year 1989 in the Champagne region resonates with the very hot vintages of 1954, 1959 and 1964. The very early budburst exposed the vineyards to a severe frost on April 27th, particularly affecting the Marne Valley and the eastern part of the Montagne de Reims, but sparing the Veuve Clicquot vineyards. The summer conditions were then optimal until the harvest, leading to fully ripe and high-quality grapes that provided exceptionally fresh, supple and delicious wines.

The blend

The blend of Cave Privée Rosé 1989 by Veuve Clicquot is composed of Pinot Noir (66%) and Chardonnay (34%). This low dosage (6g/l) champagne was tasted in May 2010.
