The estate
Established since the 16th century in the heart of the Cornas and Saint-Joseph appellations, Domaine Courbis enhances these fine Rhône Valley terroirs and offers wines that stem from a unique tapestry of soils.
The Domaine Courbis vineyard is managed in a way that respects both mankind and his environment. The estate produces wines that bring out the full potential and richness of its Syrah, Marsanne and Roussane grape varieties.
The wine
Produced in the Cornas appellation, this Les Eygats vintage by Domaine Courbis comes from east/south-east facing vineyards that are poised at an altitude of over 250 metres. The vines, which are around twenty years old, are planted on terraces of decomposed granite (called Gore) and benefit from an exceptional micro-climate.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes are destemmed before vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Numerous pumping over and punching of the cap lead to the optimal extraction of the grape's colour. Vatting, maceration for 3 weeks. Malolactic fermentation in barrels as well as 18 months of ageing.
The blend
Les Eygats 2011 by Domaine Courbis is a 100% Syrah.
The tasting
Colour
This wine is a dark garnet colour, almost black, with purple highlights.
Nose
The aromatic and fine nose blends red fruit fragrances (cherry) with woody notes, conferred by the barrel ageing.
Palate
The round and fleshy palate blends fruity and spicy flavours with powerful tannins all while retaining a beautiful finesse. Persistent, the finish is balanced and refreshing.
Along the same lines, the inky purple colored 2011 Cornas Les Eygats is gorgeous on all accounts. Smoke, saddle leather, liquid flowers, pepper and cured meats, as well as the blue-tinged cassis and blackberry-styled fruit that's common in most young Cornas, are all present here, and it too has medium to full-bodied richness, a great mid-palate and good acidity. Give it another year or so and enjoy it through 2026.
