Description

The power and opulence of a fine wine from Tuscany by Masseto

The estate
It was in 1980 that vines were first planted in a Pliocene blue clay vein on the Masseto hill, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, near the famous small village of Bolgheri, in Tuscany. In this harsh environment, characterised by an extreme climate, considered more suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon cultivation, Merlot has somehow found a way to flourish. For nearly 40 years now, the wines of the Masseto estate have been accepted as true legends of Tuscan and Italian viticulture all over the world.

The vineyard
The Masseto estate vineyard is located in Tuscany, in Bolgheri. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate strongly influenced by the presence of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The wine
The “Second Wine” of Masseto, following in the footsteps of its big brother, Massetino was born in the 2017 vintage with a market launch in October 2019. Produced in the IGT appellation (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) of Toscana, the Massetino 2018 of Masseto is a great Tuscan red wine with a strong personality, combining opulence and elegance.

The vintage
After a very hot and dry 2017 vintage, 2018 was characterised by a cold winter. The spring was one of the rainiest in the history of the estate. The high temperatures in April, followed by heavy rainfall in May, required a lot of work in the vineyards to prevent the risk of disease. Veraison began on July 22 under a mild temperature with sunny weather and rain in August. The fruit’s ripening cycle thus proceeded gradually, guaranteeing a great quality of sugars and acidity. For this 2018 vintage of Massetino, the harvest began on August 31 on the youngest vines and on September 6 for the oldest, ending on October 9.

Vinification and ageing
The Massetino 2018 was made from 9 batches vinified separately and treated with a gentle extraction in order to preserve the finesse of the tannin structure. The new Masseto cellar built by the Italian architects Zito & Mori and inaugurated in 2017 has made it possible to implement gravity-based vinification to respect the integrity of the fruit. The fermentations were carried out in conical concrete vats, ensuring gentle extractions. Once the malolactic fermentation has been carried out in barrels (50% new oak), the ageing took place for 12 months before blending, followed by an additional 3 months of ageing before bottling. The Massetino 2018 will continue to age in the bottle until it is marketed in October 2020.

The blend
Merlot
(94%), cabernet franc (6%).

The tasting

Colour
The Massetino 2018 presents a beautiful ruby red colour with purple hues.

Nose
The Massetino 2018 by the Masseto estate offers an expressive bouquet, marked by notes of red and black fruits. Then come notes of warm spices, followed by balsamic notes. Light woody and toasted touches highlight the expertise in the ageing.

Palate
On the palate, the Massetino 2018 evolves with flexibility and elegance. Silky and refined, the tannic structure retains a pure fruit expression. The persistent finish stretches on, revealing sweet vanilla notes, enhanced by fresh mineral notes.
