The Niepoort name is synonymous with passion and tradition, which is exemplified by the work that this family carry out in the vineyard. Since 1842, five consecutive generations have been embracing this rich land, located in the heart of the Douro. Through their Niepoort wines, they all aspired to express the beauty of their terroir while showcasing their skilful, unique know-how. Working hand in hand with his elders, winemaker Dirk van der Niepoort succeeds in combining tradition and creativity. The estate’s unique vision permeates the house’s entire range of wines, which fully embrace their position as a famous Portuguese estate.
Located in the north of Portugal, on the banks of the Douro River, Niepoort enjoys an exceptional terroir. Basking in a continental climate, the terraced vines are rooted 40 metres above ground and rest on schist-influenced soils. Redoma Tinto 2018 stems from the Quinta de Napoles vineyard located at an altitude of 150 to 500 metres, made up of over 70-year-old vines. To best preserve this precious terroir, the Niepoort vines are cultivated using sustainable viticultural practices.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand with the utmost care and then taken to the cellar where they undergo a natural vinification process. The wine ferments in whole bunches in granite lagares before undergoing malolactic fermentation in wooden vats. The wine is then aged for 22 months in old wooden vats.
