Description
The richness and freshness of a fine Tuscan red wine
The estate
Fattoria Poggio di Sotto is situated in the south of Tuscany, in Italy. Founded in 1989, this estate is renowned for the high quality of its Sangiovese-based wines and is considered one of the finest estates within the Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation.
Located between 200 to 400 metres above sea level on steep slopes, the 16-hectare vineyard is certified in organic farming. The soil type and the sun exposure differs depending on the geographical location of the plots.
The vineyard's varying soil types, sun exposures and altitudes, combined with a thorough selection of the best grapes and a rigorous vinification process, give these wines a rare aromatic richness and complexity, all of which have lead to Fattoria Poggio’s fame and recognition.
The vineyard
The grapes used in the production of Poggio di Sotto's Brunello di Montalcino 2017 come from the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, situated near the Orcia river in the Val d’Orcia region. The vineyard is made up of vines that are 25 years old on average. The vines are planted between 200 and 400 metres above sea level on rocky, poor, clay-limestone soil.
The vintage
2017 will be remembered as a particularly hot and dry year. The rigorous selection of the grapes led to the production of a refined wine with a great aromatic expression.
The vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand and then rigorously sorted. The vinification takes place in oak barrels. Fermentation is carried out using wild yeast and is followed by long macerations. The wine is aged for 30 months in 30 hl Slavonian oak barrels.
The blend
This 2017 Brunello di Montalcino by Poggio di Sotto is a 100% Sangiovese.
The tasting
A beautiful ruby red colour with garnet highlights, this Tuscan wine is rich, generous, fresh and offers a wide range of aromas.
Food and wine pairing
Roasted or braised red meats, game or mature cheeses will perfectly complement this Brunello di Montalcino 2017 by Poggio di Sotto.
