Description
The typicality of a Sicilian white wine stemming from a vineyard on the Monzia island
The estate
The Tasca d'Almerita family has owned the Tasca Conti d'Almerita estate for eight generations, and has enjoyed a close relationship with the Whitaker family for over a century.
Founded in 1975 and wishing to promote the culture of Sicily, the Whitaker Foundation entrusted the Tasca Conti d'Almerita estate with a project in 2007, to restore an exceptional terroir, namely the vineyard located on the island of Mozia.
With a rich history dating back to the Phoenician era, this open-air archaeological site produces fine Sicilian wines.
The vineyard
This Mozia Grillo 2020 by Tasca Conti d'Almerita - Fondazione Whitaker stems from a vineyard that was ravaged by phylloxera, then replanted in the early 19th century. The sandy soils of this 12-hectare vineyard are of marine origin, with a high proportion of limestone. A specific pruning method is carried out to protect the vines from the wind.
The vintage
A mild winter and particularly rainy weather in March preceded moderate and dry weather conditions during the spring season, favouring the development of the vines. As the harvest approached, the climate was marked by warm temperatures. Harvested a little before reaching optimum ripeness in order to preserve their freshness, the grapes reveal an ideal sugar content as well as a beautiful aromatic palette.
The vinification and ageing
Fermentation for 15 days in stainless steel tanks at 16-18°C. Ageing lasts 5 months in steel tanks with the presence of yeast.
The blend
Grillo (100%)
