Description
The complexity and elegance of a Rioja red wine by Marqués de Riscal
The producer
Located near the village of Logroño, in the north of Spain, Bodega Marqués de Riscal dates back to 1858.
Although the estate is one of the first winemaking institutions in La Rioja, Marqués de Riscal's uniqueness lies in its pioneering spirit and its constant quest for excellence, which is reflected in its wide range of refined wines with a rich aromatic palette.
In 2011, Marqués de Riscal was recognised as one of the top 10 most admired wine brands in the world by the highly respected magazine "Drinks International", Marquès de Riscal is a benchmark not only due to both the quality of its wines and the exceptional architecture designed by Frank O. Gehry.
The wine
Reserva 2016 by Marqués de Riscal is made from Rioja Alavesa vineyards planted before the 1970s on clay-limestone soils.
The vintage
The winter was particularly mild, with a lot of rainfall which compensated for the previous season’s very dry weather. Budburst was noted on the 14th of April. The hot and dry conditions during the summer, particularly in August and early September, led to water stress which affected the vineyard. The situation improved from mid-September onwards, the rainy spells boosted the development of the vineyard and the cool temperatures at night helped refine the ripening process.
The vinification and ageing
Fermentation lasts 12 days maximum, followed by a 12-day skin maceration. The wine is aged in American oak barrels for approximately two years, followed by at least one year of bottle ageing before being sold.
The blend
Marqués de Riscal's Reserva 2016 comprises a blend of Tempranillo (96%) and Graciano (4%). The balance and refinement of Tempranillo is harmoniously combined with the freshness and vivacity of Graciano.
