Description
A great wine from Campania which subtly reveals the most beautiful nuances and finesse
The estate
The Mastroberardino family has been an important player in the world of Campania wines for over three centuries. Legend has it that a man named Berardino once acquired the land from a certain Mastro to develop vine cultivation. This was how the two names merged, creating a passionate family with great know-how. Since then, the love and deep respect for the vineyard has been passed on from generation to generation. In 1878, Angelo Mastroberdino decided to only develop wines of exceptional quality, intended for crossing Italian borders. Since then, the reputation of Mastroberdino wines has grown steadily, reaching the heights of excellence of great Italian wines today.
The vineyard
Mastroberardino produces wines from 250 hectares of vines spread over 17 different estates. Located in the most prestigious regions of the Campania wine region in Italy, the estate’s vineyards enjoy exceptional terroirs such as Irpinia, Sannio or even Avellino. Moreover, at the foot of Vesuvius and not far from the famous ruins of Pompeii, Mastroberardino has created a superb vineyard measuring just one hectare, entirely planted with native grape varieties.
The 2020 Lacryma Christi Del Vesuvio comes from soils typical to the Vesuvian region: volcanic minerals influence the soil and offer great aromatic richness to the vines. The south-east facing, 15-year-old vineyard is located at the heart of the Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio DOC Rosso appellation, an appellation recognised for its rich history and high-quality wines.
The wine
Lacryma Christi literally means the tears of Christ. An iconic Italian wine from the Naples region, it bears a most legendary story. According to myth, Lacryma Christi wines were borne from the tears shed by Jesus Christ on Mount Vesuvius.
Winemaking and ageing
After the manual harvests, which took place in mid-October, the berries returned to the cellar to begin a traditional winemaking process. The grapes ferment in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks. After the initial ageing process, the wine ages for at least one more month in bottle before being put on the market.
