Description
The opulence and refinement of a great Sicilian white wine from Etna's vineyards
The estate
IDDA is an innovative project launched in 2017 by the Gaja family, producers of Barbaresco wines, and the Sicilian Graci family, based in the province of Catania, who have been making wines on the slopes of Mount Etna since 2004.
These two illustrious names in Italian viticulture have joined forces to produce, under the name IDDA by Gaja & Graci, fine red and white Sicilian wines from vineyards located on this emblematic volcano.
The name "Idda", a Sicilian word meaning "she", is a tribute to this volcano, considered "THE" mountain, both feared and admired, which has marked the history of Sicily for centuries. Through the representation of this mountain, Alberto Gaja pays tribute to the female figures of his family, whose strength and vitality are a source of inspiration in the making of these wines.
The vineyard
IDDA by Gaja & Graci reigns over a 21-hectare vineyard spread over three plots. The estate is unique in that its vineyards are located on the southern side of Mount Etna, whereas many other estates are located on the northern side.
Located in the municipalities of Biancavilla, Belpasso and a site called Tartaraci, these vineyards benefit from a humid climate, high temperatures and optimal sunshine, which allow for earlier ripening than on the other sides of the volcano.
The wine
Produced since 2018, IDDA Sicilia Bianco by IDDA by Gaja & Graci is a Sicilian wine made from a century-old vineyard located between Belpasso and Biancavilla. Located between 600 and 1,000 metres above sea level, this terroir is characterised by its rocky volcanic soils surrounded by lava flows dating from several thousand years. The label of this wine reveals two references: the blue hue of the sea that is near the vineyards and a spiral shape, an ancient symbol evoking cyclic continuity and eternal growth.
Vinification and ageing
Aged for 12 months in stainless steel barrels and vats.
The blend
Carricante (100).
