Description
The typicity of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
The Estate
With origins dating back to the 16th century and the first harvest carried out in 1599, the Château Fombrauge is one of the oldest crus of Saint-Émilion. The magnificent estate features a 17th-century chartreuse. Under the impetus of the Dumas de Fombrauge family, Château Fombrauge became a true model for Bordeaux viticulture. This Bernard Magrez property today stands among the finest crus of Saint-Émilion.
The Vineyard
Located around Saint-Christophe des Bardes, the Château Fombrauge vineyard covers 58 hectares of vines with an average age of 37 years. They are planted on clay-limestone soils with Fronsadais molasses typical of Saint-Émilion. The vineyard is maintained parcel by parcel with cover cropping of the vine rows and plowing.
Vinification
The Château Fombrauge cuvées undergo a parcel selection by terroir and by grape variety while respecting the age of the vines. The estate is equipped with drones that enable the creation of maturity maps. Once the manual harvests have been carried out in small crates and after sorting on a table by 20 experienced staff, the berries are vinified in small-capacity wooden, stainless steel and concrete vats by gravity with a pre-fermentation maceration and entirely manual punch-downs.
Aging
16 months including 40% in new barrels, 60% in one-wine barrels.
Blend
This Château Fombrauge 2019 is the result of a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.
