Description

A complex and structured Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The estate

With origins dating back to the 16th century and its first harvest dating back to 1599, Château Fombrauge is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Émilion. The beautiful property has a charterhouse dating from the 17th century. Under the leadership of the Dumas de Fombrauge family, Château Fombrauge has become a real model for Bordeaux viticulture. This Bernard Magrez property shines today as one of the most beautiful of Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard

Château Fombrauge 2021 is a Saint-Emilion wine that stems from a 60-hectare vineyard located around Saint-Christophe des Bardes. The vines are 23 years old on average and are planted on clay-limestone soils with ‘’molasses du Fronsadais’’. The vineyard, bearing a High Environmental Value Level 3 certificate, is cultivated by means of plot maintenance with grassing of the vine rows and ploughing.

The vintage

A mild, wet autumn preceded a warm, wet winter. The cool, rainy spring was marked by frost. The summer was cool and wet.

Vinification and ageing

Selection by plot and by grape variety. The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates and are sorted before and after destemming. Vatting by gravity flow and vinification in wooden, stainless steel and concrete tanks. 70 barrels in full vinification.  Pre-fermentation maceration for 3 to 5 days at 8°C. Maceration period for 28 to 32 days (Merlot) and 26 to 28 days (Cabernet Franc). Malolactic fermentation in barrels (2/3 new and 1/3 second fill barrels) or in vats (stainless steel and concrete). The wine is aged for 16 months in barrels (35% new and 65% second fill).

The blend

Merlot (85%)

Cabernet Franc (15%).
