Decanter

Oak elements on the nose with ripe blackcurrant fruit, dried herbs, black pepper, floral violets and peonies. Smooth and velvety, this is full of bright red berry fruit and softly chalky tannins. A really delicate style with precision at the fore - lots of purity and clarity with the acidity driving the wine forward. Polished and well controlled, still a little tight perhaps but all straightforward, giving width without any heaviness. I like this a lot. Fun, friendly, precise and controlled. Ends minty and stony. Clay and some gravel on the plateau. Some blockage. 94m, 6cf. 14.5%. 3.5pH. A yield of 32hl/ha. Ageing 75% in barrels (1/3 new) and 25% in a variety of vessels (stoneware, concrete and stainless steel).

Flowers, black cherries, vanilla, and licorice infuse the perfume. On the palate, the wine is packed with sweet red, with black fruits and an array of spices, finishing with cherries, plums, and a peppery endnote. You can enjoy this wine without hesitation upon release, or allow it to age in the bottle for more complexities. The wine blends 94% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. 14.8% ABV. Drink from 2028-2048. 92-94 Pts

An enjoyable and impressive wine, super juicy, raspberry and damson fruits, well balanced with tension and a climb through the palate set against a wash of cedar oak. Harvest September 15 to 29. 33% new oak. 3.5ph.

The bouquet clearly expresses the clay-limestone character, with chalky notes that bring freshness, while hints of black berries contribute the fruity dimension. On the palate, the wine shows a linear, vibrant profile. It has character, clarity and energy. It seems to me it could be a little more enveloping. With time, and the ageing to come, it should gain a bit more dimension, but the foundations are well in place.

Vinum

The proportion of new oak was reduced from 70% to 25%; a very deep color and a nose marked by dark fruit, with notes of dark chocolate and rose petals; on the palate, delicate fruit, a slightly creamy texture, fine, perfectly ripe tannins, and harmoniously integrated acidity; a long finish on red berries. An excellent, finesse-driven Fombrauge.

The elegance of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

The estate

Rooted in history since the 16th century, Château Fombrauge saw its first harvest in 1599, making it one of the oldest wine estates in Saint-Émilion. This property is home to a 17th-century chartreuse, a testament to its rich past. Under the direction of the Dumas de Fombrauge family, the estate has established itself as a benchmark in Bordeaux viticulture. Today, thanks to Bernard Magrez, Château Fombrauge shines among the most prestigious crus on the right bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Covering 59 hectares, this exceptional terroir of Saint-Emilion consists of clay-limestone soils enriched with molasses from the Agenais and Fronsadais. The vines, averaging 25 years of age, are planted at a density of 6,000 vines per hectare. Vineyard management relies on environmentally friendly practices that respect biodiversity, notably incorporating the use of drones for precise parcel monitoring.

The vintage

The year was marked by particularly demanding weather conditions. After a mild, dry winter leading to early budbreak, the spring proved favorable. The summer was then extremely hot and marked by severe drought until the end of August, before giving way to milder conditions. Harvests took place from September 15 to 29, yielding 32 hectoliters per hectare.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes undergo rigorous selection through manual sorting followed by optical sorting. Maceration lasts between 25 and 28 days, with extraction carefully adapted to each vat depending on the origin of the parcel. Aging then takes place in 75% barrels, one-third of which are new oak, while the remaining 25% is aged in various containers such as sandstone, concrete, and stainless steel.

Grape varieties

The blend of this Château Fombrauge 2025 is composed of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.
