Description
An exceptional box set highlight the art of ageing through 6 great vintages of Château Lagrange
The producer
Château Lagrange is one of the iconic references of the Saint-Julien appellation. The property boasts ancient origins dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, when the place housed the "Villa Rustica". Then, the Order of the Templars came to introduce wine-growing at the property. Château Lagrange experienced a true golden age in the 18th century and achieved the title of 3rd Classified Growth in the Official Classification of 1855. It was in 1983 that Château Lagrange was acquired by the Japanese group Suntory and its president Keizo Saji. At the end of a major renovation and investment program, spearheaded by a dynamic team, Château Lagrange has reached the pinnacle of quality among Médoc wine estates.
The vineyard
The truly exceptional Château Lagrange vineyard extends over 118 hectares of vines, all in one piece. The vineyard enjoys a superb location on two hills made of "Gunz" gravel. The vines are 45 years old on average. They are oriented north-south and are planted in silico-gravelly soils upon a clay-limestone subsoil. The temperate climate of the vineyard is oceanic in nature.
The wine
Reflecting the constant quest for innovation and excellence advocated by the property, the Collection Remarquable is a unique and refined invitation to rediscover 6 vintages of Château Lagrange: 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
These wines are unique because they have been aged in barrels made from remarkable three-hundred-year-old oak trees. These majestic oaks are situated in plots sustainably managed by the National Forestry Office, whose state forests were first established by Louis XIV and his Prime Minister Colbert in 1669. In addition to being numbered, each barrel bears the name of the oak in which it aged, a grandiose and silent witness of more than 300 years of history.
These six collector's vintages are presented in a magnificent solid wooden case, whose undulations echo the topography of the estate's hills.
Only 250 cases of this unique collection have been produced. For this special occasion, each bottle is adorned with an elegant black and gold finish.
The Collection Remarquable by Château Lagrange highlights both the art of ageing and the centuries-old history of each of oak tree at the origin of the 6 barrels in which these great wines have been matured. Indeed, each of these 6 great vintages of Château Lagrange has been aged in a dedicated barrel made from a specific remarkable oak species.
2009 - Morat Oak, nicknamed "the big brother", 350 years old.
2011 - Bangor Oak, “the giant of Compiègne”, aged 370 years.
2012 - Aberdeen Oak, 360 years old.
2013 - Oak from La Futaie des Clos, 353 years old.
2014 - Oak from La Futaie des Clos II, 353 years old
2015 - Le Vieux Morat Oak - approximately 350 years old.
The blend
The 6 wines unveiled in this Collection Remarquable by Château Lagrange come from a blend that varies depending on the vintage. The blend is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
The tasting
These extremely fine-grained barrels lend the wines an infinite delicacy enhanced by fine and silky tannins, guarantees of exceptional ageing potential. These 6 great wines, with an intense colour and a complex nose, harmoniously combine over the tasting refinement and structure with pure and bright fruit.
