The property
Founded in 1910 by the Sauer family, the family estate of Kanonkop Wine Estate gets its name from a famous hill (kop) on the Simonsberg mountain where a cannon (Kanon) was fired during the 17th and 18th centuries to announce the approach of sailing ships in Table Bay so that local farmers could subsequently come to the port located 50 kilometres away to sell their fruit and vegetable production.
The first wines of the estate were made as early as 1973 under the impetus of Paul Sauer, a politician who sat in the South African parliament for 41 years, with the ambition of producing great South African wines.
Under the features of brothers Johann and Paul Krige, the 4th generation continues to produce wines recognised beyond the borders for their pure and refined expression of the identity of Stellenbosch, an emblematic appellation of the Western Cape region.
The vineyard
The 2021 Pinotage from Kanonkop Wine Estate is a Western Cape wine made from the vineyards of Simonsberg and Stellenbosch. The vines, aged 32 to 67 years on average, rest on soils partly composed of decomposed granite.
Vinification and ageing
Fermentation in concrete vats accompanied by regular manual punch-downs. Three-day maceration before malolactic fermentation. Ageing for 18 months in French oak barrels (80% new, 20% one wine).
Grape variety
Pinotage (100%).
