Characteristics and tasting advice for Almaviva's EPU 2022
Tasting
Colour
A deep and opaque ruby red colour.
Nose
Intense and complex, the nose reveals fruity aromas (blackcurrant, cherry, wild strawberry, fig) and liquorice.
Palate
The attack is juicy and supple, with round and silky tannins. The voluptuous texture and the balance between freshness and maturity culminate in a tasty and persistent finish.
The balance and aromatic structure of a great Chilean red wine
The property
Viña Almaviva was born in 1997 following a partnership between Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and Don Alfonso Larrain, President of Viña Concha y Toro. The Viña Almaviva project was born from the ambition to create a very great wine from Chile, combining French viticultural know-how with the unique expression of this Central Valley terroir.
The vineyard
Located in the heart of the beautiful Chilean valley of Maipo, the Almaviva vineyard covers 50 hectares. The emblematic grape varieties of the Bordeaux vineyard thrive wonderfully on this exceptional terroir. Almaviva has today become an essential reference for great wines from Central Valley around the world.
The wine
Epu comes from a vineyard in Puente Alto, located in the high Maipo valley, benefiting from a unique terroir. The stony soils, the dry Mediterranean climate and the large temperature range between day and night create ideal conditions for growing Bordeaux grape varieties. These characteristics allow the grapes to develop optimal maturity while maintaining beautiful freshness.
The vintage
2022 was marked by a particularly dry winter, with only 70 mm of precipitation, 71% less than the historical average. A warm spring followed by a summer with more moderate temperatures led to an early harvest. This vintage, although drier than normal, has produced balanced wines, rich in fruit, with beautiful acidity.
Vinification and ageing
The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 10% of which were new, in order to refine its aromas while preserving the expression of the fruit.
Blend
Cabernet sauvignon (84%)
Carménère (10%)
Merlot (3%)
Cabernet franc (2%)
Petit verdot (1%).
