Decanter

Upfront and instantly so welcoming and friendly and fun, bright, lively, full on acidity kicks off the expression – so lifted with the focus on the pure fruit. Salty undercurrent that gives such an incredible contrast to the ripe strawberry fruit. But this is also lacking no richness – it’s got muscles, power, concentration and such capacity to age. Fabulous. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Licorice, black currants, flowers, blackberries, plums, cocoa and leafy tobacco nuances create the perfume. The palate is even better with its vivid display of fresh, juicy, crisp, red, with black fruits paired with a fine line of tannins down the middle giving you grace, character, and refined freshness. The elegant palate is fresh, lively, clean, and pure, so you taste, and feel the power, as well as the vitality of the vintage. One of the most important points in the growing season were that from early June, to July 10, climatically it was hot and dry. The mid-summer rains following those dates provided much needed nourishment, along with the rains that fell July 22 became a good part of the success of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc. 12.5% ABV. Picking took place September 2 - September 20. Yields were low at 27 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2029-2050. 93-95 Pts

The energy in the glass is immediately in evidence: richly fragrant autumnal berry fruit, great lift through the palate, mouthwatering on the finish, good balance, chalky, slate-filled tannins, classic and balanced, with slate and pumice stone notes, lots of cassis and bilberry fruit. Harvest September 2–20. pH 3.8.

The finesse with which the bouquet of Carruades unfolds immediately suggests a focus on high-definition precision. Notes of blackcurrant and mint clearly convey freshness, while the detail and refinement assert depth. The attack only confirms the finesse sketched by the bouquet. The wine is precise and elegant, without failing to underline the power it possesses, though never forcing it. It uses this power with commendable relevance, pairing it with a sharp structure that beautifully outlines the many nuances that make this wine as harmonious as it is vibrant. A superb success that heralds the grand wine with breathtaking nonchalance. It loves its big brother, but it doesn’t hesitate for a second to challenge it!

Deep, intense red color with purple highlights. Very aromatic, refined, fruity and subtle nose. Notes of pine needles reminiscent of Pessac. Deep when the glass is swirled. Ultra-precise in texture from the attack, very aromatic on the mid-palate, with a graceful feel, the wine melts across the palate, developing into something broad, velvety, complex and long. Not an ounce of tannin except for the last 5% of the palate. Blend: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 12.7%. Yield: 28 hl/ha. 13% press wine. Harvest: from 02 to 20/09. Admire the power of the result for such a low alcohol level.

Vinum

Fine and delicate, floral, with red fruit and cherry-grape sugar notes; on the palate, light-footed on the attack, then showing grippy tannins through the mid-palate, with the fruit pushing back; the wine is slender yet still powerful—energy without an ounce of fat; pleasantly long and saline on the finish, ending on blood orange. A second wine that doesn’t have to hide behind many a grand vin.

Description

A second wine from Pauillac imbued with elegance and freshness

The estate

Crowned First Growth in the 1855 Classification, Château Lafite-Rothschild commands its gravelly terroirs with authority. Rooted in a long winegrowing history dating back to 1620, it has established itself over the centuries as one of the most illustrious references of the Pauillac appellation, nestled on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux vineyard. Great historical figures, from Cardinal de Richelieu to Thomas Jefferson, then head of the United States, were won over by the inimitable elegance and singular character of its exceptional wines.

The vineyard

The vineyard stretches across the privileged terroirs of the Pauillac appellation. The wine notably comes from the famous Carruades plateau, the highest point of the appellation, acquired in 1845. This exceptional terroir is composed of deep gravelly soils resting on a limestone subsoil, offering optimal drainage and excellent thermal regulation. The vines, with an average age of nearly forty years, are cultivated at a low density of 8,000 plants per hectare. The estate is also committed to an eco-responsible approach, with organic farming certification.

The wine

Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite-Rothschild.

The vintage

A wet winter preceded a particularly dry spring and summer, punctuated by a few rainy episodes ensuring the proper ripening of the berries. Harvest from 2 to 20 September.

Grape varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (34%), Cabernet Franc (9%) and Petit Verdot (2%).
