Decanter

Buttery with apple tart aromas, vanilla pastry and dried fruit. Flinty matches and grilled citrus on the palate. A mature and evolved style that is carefully dialled-in.

The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs, a pure Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs Montagne de Reims and Montgueux, spent just over two years on lees. Youthful verve on the nose sprays with ripe Amalfi lemon and an overtone of ozone. The palate is light, bright and sprightly, alive with frothy smooth foam that underlines the wine's youthfulness even more. A perfect apéro style with a lip-smacking finish. Dosage is 10 grams per liter. (Lot 230748-3170) - Anne Krebiehl MW

The NV Champagne Blanc De Blancs Brut reveals a bright yellow hue and is floral and perfumed with aromas of honeysuckle, poached pear, parmesan, and powdery chalk. Medium-framed, it has an elegant and silky texture, a pillowing mousse, a clean and tapered finish. This cuvée was relaunched in 2018, and it has held true to my previous tastings, offering an understated, finessed feel with a good deal of charm. Drink now or over the next 6-8 years. Disgorged 2023.

Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs gives a Champagne that has a white fruit aroma and citrus freshness. At the same time, this bottling is mineral, beautifully textured and lightly yeasty. Drink now.

Description

Charles Heidsieck reveals an aromatic and sophisticated Blanc de Blancs

The estate

An essential reference for great Champagne wines, the Charles Heidsieck House maintains a prestigious heritage with two thousand year old chalk pits. The pioneering Charles Heidsieck began to distinguish itself from the end of the 1980s through showcasing its multi-vintage Brut champagne’s exceptional capacity for aromatic evolution. In 1987, Charles Heidsieck was the first Champagne house to indicate its “cellaring” year to follow the evolution of the wine over time.

The vineyard

The Charles Heidsieck Champagne House owns a vineyard of around 60 hectares in Marne and Aube. This vineyard has received sustainable viticulture and High Environmental Value certifications. In addition to its own vineyard and through following the Champagne model, Charles Heidsieck supplements its vineyard with long-term supply contracts with rigorously selected wine-growers and cooperatives.

The wine

The Blanc de Blancs is an iconic cuvée which pays tribute to the know-how of Charles Heidsieck. In fact, it was in 1949, under the leadership of Charles-Marcel, the grandson of Charles Heidsieck, that the house was one of the pioneers in Champagne by creating the first ever Blanc de Blancs. In 2018, the Charles Heidsieck house decided to once again offer the Blanc de Blancs with the purpose of celebrating great champagnes and blending, two arts perfectly mastered by the house.

The blend

The Blanc de Blancs Charles Heidsieck elevates the grandeur of Chardonnay wines and is composed of 25% reserve wines, which combine in perfect harmony with the younger wines of the same year. The champagne has an incomparable patina which makes for the house’s signature during a long ageing process in the coolness of the house’s chalk pits.

Blanc de Blancs by Charles Heidsieck: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

Colour
The wine is a delicate and crystalline light gold with luminous reflections.

Nose
The complex aromatic bouquet reveals fragrances of ripe fruit such as vine peach and candied citrus fruits, as well as subtle fragrances of white flower (linden, honeysuckle) and fresh hazelnuts. During aeration, flavourful notes of citrus (mandarin, lemon) are gradually exuded.

Palate
The palate seduces with its freshness and tension, as well as its velvety and mouth-coating texture. The persistent finish combines a delicious minerality with indulgent saline notes. An elegant, tight and deliciously generous Blanc de Blancs.
