Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A lovely, lacy Champagne, with ripe apricot, fennel seed and espresso aromas. This caresses the palate with a finely detailed mousse and expansive flavors of pineapple pâte de fruit, toasted brioche, fleur de sel and grated ginger. Long and chalky on the finish, this is a prima ballerina, showing power cloaked in grace. Disgorged winter 2015. Drink now through 2032.

Very lively, taut and willowy. Very long and lean and vital. Sort of electric energy. Blackcurrant-leaf flavours. (JR)

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2002 Clos du Mesnil is wonderfully pliant and expressive in the glass. The radiant personality of the year comes through in the wine’s ripe, tropically-leaning flavors and open-knit personality. I imagine the 2002 will develop at a relatively fast pace by Clos du Mesnil standards. Even so, there is more than enough freshness underpinning the fruit to support at least two decades of very fine drinking.

La RVF

A highly anticipated Clos du Mesnil in this landmark vintage. This Chardonnay, vinified in small Champagne barrels (205 liters), unfolds a subtly exotic and spicy nose over a palate of great power and depth, with a surprising saline sensation on the finish. A great cellar-worthy Champagne. Majestic!

The purity and freshness of a great vintage champagne

The property

The Champagne Krug House was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary and passionate man. It holds a unique library in the world consisting of more than 150 reserve wines, some of which are over 15 years old.

The vineyard

With more than 250 different plots including the prestigious Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, Maison Krug holds an exceptional vine heritage in Champagne.

The wine

Characterized as "the essence of Krug", this rare champagne exalts the expression of a single plot of chardonnay from a unique harvest. This 1.84-hectare vineyard, surrounded by protective walls since 1698, overlooks the church of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most legendary villages in the region.

The vintage

Maison Krug chose to create the Krug Clos du Mesnil 2002 because this year, marked by the generosity of yields, offered ideal conditions for the maturation of magnificent grapes, promising to reveal the full potential of this walled plot.

Vinification and aging

After 13 years in the Krug cellars, this vintage 2002 champagne reveals a precise signature and striking grace.
