Jancis Robinson

Jancis Robinson

Healthy, non-botrytised Sémillon grapes with 25% Sauvignon Gris from their Barsac estate. Bottle A: screwcap. Green nose, then fat. Not integrated. Very youthful. (I scored this bottle 16.5++, drink 2025–2032.) Bottle B: Diam. Zesty and fresh and lively. And well balanced. (JR)

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2019 C de Sec du Château Closiot has quite a Burgundian nose, with a fair bit of reduction evident, masking the terroir at the moment. The palate is well balanced with a dry, toasty entry. The oak feels a bit fumbled in this dry Sauternes and spoils what could have been a much better wine. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Le C Sec du Chateau Closiot opens with cedar and honeysuckle scents, followed by a core of lemon curd and lime cordial plus a hint of struck flint. The medium-bodied palate has soft acidity and plenty of juicy citrus fruit, finishing fruity.

Characteristics and tasting advice for C de Sec 2019 from Château Closiot

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a beautiful golden yellow hue, bright and radiant.

Nose

The nose opens with aromas of very ripe exotic fruits, accompanied by grilled and toasted notes that bring lovely aromatic complexity.

Palate

The attack on the palate is supple and ample, revealing impressive volume. The palate unfolds a fine fruity intensity, supported by a lively, refreshing citrus-driven acidity. The finish, powerful and very fresh, lingers with elegance.

Food and wine pairings

This dry white Bordeaux pairs perfectly with firm-fleshed sea fish, seafood, or roasted poultry. It also matches beautifully with dishes featuring citrus or mild spices.

A dry white Bordeaux that transcends the conventions of Barsac

The estate

Established in 1988 with the SCEA Château Closiot, this Bordeaux property located in Barsac, 35 kilometers southeast of Bordeaux, cultivates 8 hectares of vines. A former farm of Château Coutet in the 19th century, recognizable by its crenellated tower, the estate stands out for its limestone terroirs, which favor the production of sweet wines that are both concentrated and taut. Since 2017, the property has been managed by Jean-Marie Guffens, a renowned Burgundian winemaker who brings his expertise and a winemaking philosophy respectful of the terroir.

The vineyard

The vineyard from which this Bordeaux Blancs Secs originates lies on red sandy-clay soils mixed with clay-limestone deposits and gravel, all resting on a base of fractured limestone. This distinctive geological composition gives the wine its characteristic minerality and tension. Located in immediate proximity to the Ciron, the vineyard benefits from a favorable microclimate marked by morning mists and generous afternoon sunshine. The grape composition is dominated by Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Gris, varieties perfectly suited to expressing this limestone terroir.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage offered favorable climatic conditions, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. The balance between sunshine and freshness helped preserve a fine natural acidity while developing remarkable aromatic concentration. The harvest was carried out by hand, with rigorous selection of healthy grapes intended for the production of the dry wine.

Winemaking and aging

The vinification of C de Sec 2019 is carried out partly in barrels, around 25% of which are new oak, with the remainder vinified in concrete vats. This approach enhances the wine’s aromatic complexity and texture while preserving its freshness. Aging continues on fine lees with regular bâtonnage, bringing roundness and richness to the wine. Part of the aging takes place in concrete vats, promoting the pure expression of the fruit and the minerality of the terroir.
