Clos des Ruelles 2016 of Château de Chamirey: an elegant and complex Mercurey 1er Cru

The Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Ruelles of Château de Chamirey is a 100% Pinot Noir red wine produced in the Mercurey 1er Cru appellation. This 2.5-hectare vineyard, monopolized by Château de Chamirey, is planted on soils concentrated in iron oxide. The wine is aged in oak barrels for an average of 15 months.

At tasting, the Clos des Ruelles 2016 of Château de Chamirey displays a ruby colour with shades of purple. Very fine, the wine develops fruity and spicy fragrances. Elegant on the palate, the Clos des Ruelles 2016 of Château de Chamirey is complex and offers a fantastically long finish.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Ruelles is a bit firmer and more marked by its élevage in 25% new oak than the lovely Clos de la Maladière (which sees somewhat less new wood), exhibiting aromas of ripe red fruits and barrel spice, followed by a medium-bodied, tight-knit palate that concludes with some fine-grained but chewy tannins. I suspect it will come together with time, but for now, I have a preference for the Clos de la Maladière.
