Vinum

Elegant and balanced, with an almost silky character, true to its style and to the image of the vintage; its freshness and charm can be enjoyed quite soon.

Robert Parker

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Desmirail features woody/oaky notions to start, opening out to reveal Black Forest cake, blackcurrant cordial and forest floor scents with a waft of Marmite toast. Medium-bodied, the palate is quite chewy with notable oak and just enough fruit, finishing a tad firm and abrupt.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Fresh damson plum and cherry purée flavors show good energy but remain on the elegant side, inlaid with light alder, lilac and iron notes. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2025. 3,333 cases made.

Decanter

Toasty nose with hints of mocha and vanilla, ripe blackcurrant aromas and smoky nuances. Rich and intense on the palate, with great structure.

James Suckling

A polished, structured red with currant, wet-earth and shiitake mushroom character. Medium body. Chewy finish. Shows structure and focus. Needs two or three years to soften. Drink after 2021.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Desmirail is pale to medium garnet-purple in color. It needs a little coaxing to uncover notes of redcurrant jelly, warm plums, and boysenberries with wafts of dried Provence herbs and tree bark. Medium-bodied, the palate is bright and crunchy with plenty of red berry layers and an approachable, grainy texture, finishing long and refreshing.

92

/100

La RVF

The 2017 remains gentle, quite delicate, and is already approachable, in a supple style.

91

/100

Le Figaro Vin

Fresh wine, a bit firm, with a vegetal note, tight tannins, and a long finish.

85

/100

Yves Beck

Bouquet marked by oak with notes of vanilla and clove. Notes of chocolate and caramel. The palate reveals roasted notes, a touch of sweetness and little density.

86

/100

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Fruity, pleasant, and light wine.

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

87–89. Barrel Sample. The flavor of new wood is strong in this wine. It has a tough structure and the merest hints of fruit. It should fill out once the overbearing wood has gone. Drink from 2024.

Description

The radiant smoothness of a charming Margaux wine

The estate

A Margaux Third Classified Growth of 1855, Château Desmirail illustrates, through its wines, the typical qualities of its exceptional terroir. Owned by the Lurton family since 1992, Château Desmirail has equipped itself with an infrastructure that matches its terroir, allowing for the elevation of this Cru Classé to the highest level.

The vineyard

Château Desmirail is a Margaux wine that stems from a forty-hectare vineyard cultivated with the greatest respect for the environment, using sustainable viticultural practices. The soils are made up of gravel dating from the Quaternary period.

The vintage

The 2017 vintage was atypical and not very clement, which did not spare the estate's vineyards, which were considerably affected by frost. Château Desmirail 2017 comes as a great reward for all the attention paid from the vine to the cellar along with the masterful vinification process.

The blend

Merlot (55%)

Cabernet Sauvignon (35%)

Petit Verdot (10%).

Château Desmirail 2017: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

Nose

The nose is highly expressive, revealing pure notes of small black fruits (blackcurrant, cherry) which evolve into elegant roasted notes reminiscent of coffee when aerated.

Palate

On the palate, the wine has a smooth, delicate texture, which does not lose its hold in the mid-palate thanks to the softness and crunchiness of the fruit. The aromatic persistence is prolonged in the powerful coffee-flavoured finish, revealing the presence of elegant oak.
