Description

A refined and elegant Margaux wine

The estate

Château Durfort-Vivens takes its name, on the one hand, from the Durfort de Duras family who settled in the Margaux appellation in the 14th century and, on the other hand, from Viscount Robert Labat de Vivens, who in 1824 became, through inheritance, the owner of the estate to which he added his name.

Acquired in 1937 by the owners of Château Margaux, of which one of the main shareholders was the Lurton family at the time, this Second Grand Cru Classé became the property of Lucien Lurton in 1961 and then passed to his son, Gonzague Lurton, in 1992.

Aged partly in amphorae, the wines of Château Durfort-Vivens are recognised for their precision and elegance. The property now owns the largest amphorae cellar in the world.

The vineyard

Château Durfort-Vivens produces Margaux wines from a 62-hectare vineyard that rests on a deep gravel soil with a sandy-clay subsoil. In 2016, Château Durfort-Vivens was the first of the Margaux Classified Growths to obtain both organic farming and biodynamic certifications. While the wines have been labeled “zero residue” since 2014, the property has also been HVE and SME certified since 2019.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification by plot. Alcoholic fermentation with natural yeasts. Daily pumping over to encourage gentle extractions. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation for 21 days. The wine is aged for 18 months in new barrels (70%) and in TAVA amphorae (30%).

The blend

Château Durfort-Vivens 2021 comprises a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (97%) and Merlot (3%).
