Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Silky and enticing, with gently mulled raspberry and boysenberry fruit that glides through, flecked with anise, red tea and sandalwood notes. Ready to go. Drink now through 2035. 2,300 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Decanter

Structured and so appealing on the palate, this has a rich texture but doesn’t come across as too much. Filling yet lifted, giving freshness and ripe fruit. I love the delicacy of the tannins; this is finessed with so much detail on show. It feels cool and calm, not shouting, everything in harmony and delivering a truly classically styled wine. The power is there for sure, but it has poise too. A lovely Lagrange.

This shows aromas of blackberries and raspberries with hints of dried orange peel and chocolate. Some spices, too. Medium-bodied, polished and smooth with a juicy character. Flavorful, polished finish. Drink or hold.

These guys have been on a hot streak, and their 2022 shows why. The showy nose, with its cigar box, mint, black cherries, and flowers, opens the wine. Full-bodied, fresh, and vibrant, with a juicy, fruity, long, elegant, deep finish that seals the deal. The wine blends 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2028–2055.

Deep garnet, purple reflections. Somewhat shy bouquet, dark cherries, hints of blackberries, a touch of orange zest. Juicy, fruit-driven texture, ripe plums, hints of fig, freshly structured, mineral and citrus on the finish, already very accessible.

Continuing a run of exceptional vintages where everything seems to be going right at this property. High Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, and it comes across in the sleek black fruits and peony character, very floral and finessed. Good stuff, this is impressive, enjoyable, very St Julien and very good. 50% new oak for ageing, Eric Boissenot consultant, Mathieu Bordes director since 2013.

Le Figaro Vin

An opulent, inviting bouquet of ripe red fruits such as plum, pomegranate, and strawberry. Generous, juicy, and vibrant on the palate, with a savory finish.

The bouquet of Lagrange unfolds with subtlety and elegance. It is harmonious, precise and deep. No element dominates, except for an overarching sense of finesse. Delicate hints of fresh wood precede aromas of blueberries, a touch of graphite, menthol notes and then a hint of licorice. The silky attack leads into a linear, velvety, elegant and deep wine. Its tannins emerge late and display their power with tact and precision. They provide valuable support and promise excellent ageing potential, without precluding the pleasure of enjoying the wine in its youth. A great success.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, beautiful purple color. Very aromatic, subtle nose with lovely black-fruit notes. Surprisingly broad on entry, with a rich mid-palate, the wine immediately unfolds as highly aromatic. It develops fully toward a long finish with polished tannins. The richness and energy balance each other in a deep, captivating progression. Superb! Blend: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon (a record), 12% Merlot (never this low), 2% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 13.77% - pH: 3.54 (above average). Selection: 40% of the harvest.

Description

The depth and fruity structure of a Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé

The estate

Château Lagrange is one of the iconic names of the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate's origins date back to Gallo-Roman times, when it was home to the "Villa Rustica." The Order of the Knights Templar later initiated the estate's winegrowing activities. Château Lagrange enjoyed a golden age in the 18th century and attained the title of 3rd Cru Classé in the Official Classification of 1855. In 1983, Château Lagrange became part of the Japanese Suntory group and its chairman Keizo Saji. Following a major programme of renovation and investment, and the arrival of a dynamic team, Château Lagrange has risen to the top of Médoc wines.

The vineyard

Château Lagrange 2022 is a Saint-Julien wine produced from a 118-hectare single vineyard. The vineyard enjoys a superb location on two gravelly hilltops. The vines, which are on average 45 years old, are planted on silica-gravel soils with a clay-limestone subsoil. The vineyard has a temperate, oceanic climate.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage stands out for its contrasting rainfall patterns. A mild, dry winter preceded a warm, wet spring. The high temperatures in May enabled the vines to develop rapidly. Rain in June enabled the vineyards to withstand the summer drought. Despite low yields, the grapes are of excellent quality.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes were harvested by hand, as was the first sorting, followed by a second with an optical camera. Selection by plot and within a plot. The 103 plots of vines are vinified in 102 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Batches are classified according to terroir, vine age and grape ripeness. Vinification is temperature-controlled at between 26 and 28°C for 18 to 25 days, with moderate daily pumping-over, délestage or pigeage. Malolactic fermentation by co-inoculation. Aged for 21 months in barrels (60% new).

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (86%)
Merlot (12%)
Petit Verdot (2%).
