97: Deep purple with ruby highlights. Intense cherry bouquet, coffee, very dense and showing a lot of concentration, but here too an unclean note on the bouquet. Firm, full palate, lots of substance and extract. The potential is there, but the wine remains below, unclean and not marketable. The potential would almost warrant 17/20. No rating! 98: Tasted again. The dull taste fades a little, but a wet mushroom note remains; otherwise rather delicate. Decant for two hours. Potential rating: 16/20 2002–2008

A precise Médoc with a structured character

The estate

Located in Saint-Yzans-de-Médoc, in the heart of the Médoc, the Château Loudenne dates back to the 17th century. Counted among the oldest estates in the Médoc, this Left Bank Bordeaux property is distinguished by its pink façades. After passing through the hands of several owners, Château Loudenne was acquired in 2022 by Christophe Gouache, a businessman who also owns Château Bellerive.

The vineyard

The Château Loudenne vineyard extends over an exceptional terroir of Garonne gravels in the Médoc appellation. The plots benefit from a privileged exposure facing the Gironde estuary, whose proximity creates a microclimate favorable to grape ripening. Soils composed of gravel, clay, and limestone ensure optimal drainage while allowing balanced water retention. In 1995, vines thirty to forty years old produced concentrated, high-quality grapes.

The vintage

The 1995 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by contrasting conditions. After a mild winter and a warm spring encouraging early budbreak, the summer saw exceptional drought from June to August with record temperatures. Significant rainfall between September 7 and 19 preceded the harvest, which began on September 20. These particular climatic conditions produced wines with a pronounced tannic structure and an austere character, hallmarks of this vintage, which has been the subject of numerous critical reassessments over the years.

Vinification and aging

Vinification of Château Loudenne 1995 followed traditional Bordeaux methods. Malolactic fermentation took place in new French oak barrels, an ancestral technique that lends roundness and a silky texture to the tannins. Aging was carried out with an annual renewal of around thirty percent of the barrels, and the selection of different coopers helped bring aromatic complexity to the finished wine.

Grape varieties

A subtle blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by proportions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec.
