Description
The freshness and finesse of a Haut-Médoc red wine
The property
Located in the Haut-Médoc appellation, between Margaux and Saint Julien, Château Malescasse is located on the highest point of the Médoc. The property was acquired in 2012 by Vignobles Austruy with the ambition of enhancing the potential of this estate, through major work both in the vineyard and in the cellars. Since the new classification of Crus Bourgeois in 2020, Château Malescasse has been promoted to Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.
The vineyard
The Château Malescasse vineyard covers an area of 15 hectares in one piece, planted on Quaternary Graves and sand typical of the Médoc.
The vintage
The particularly warm winter favoured an early start to the vegetative cycle. The proximity to the Gironde estuary has made it possible to preserve the vineyard from the negative temperatures recorded during the last days of March. Spring was marked by heavy rainfall requiring the attention of the Château teams to deal with strong mildew pressure. Flowering turned out to be very even. While summer conditions were sunny, dry and very hot, the rainy episode of August 12 was beneficial, especially for the young vines. The day / night temperature amplitudes favoured the good maturity of the fruit up to the harvest, which began on September 14th.
The vinification and ageing
Following the harvest, the grapes are destemmed. The berries are subject to rigorous sorting using the new densimetric equipment in the property's cellar, which keeps only the most optimally ripened fruit. Vatting of uncrushed fruit by gravity. Fermentation is accompanied by gentle punch-downs to promote selective extraction of tannins. 3 weeks of vatting. Malolactic fermentations carried out in barrels (30% of which are of new oak), as is ageing for 12 months.
The blend
The Château Malescasse 2020 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Merlot (30%).
The tasting
Dark and deep in colour, the Château Malescasse 2020 seduces with its intense fruity notes, its freshness, its delicate touch as well as its very present tannins and great finesse.
