Decanter

Seriously perfumed and aromatic on the nose. Taut and streamlined, with a lovely deep, rich, ripe fruit flavor. This is nicely defined with a tense core and focus from start to finish, while ripe blackcurrant, perfumed black cherries and strawberries are lifted by high acidity that has bite and a touch of sourness. Tannins are fine and give the frame. Fresh, lifted finish. A touch severe right now with the acidity and sense of tension, but this has nice potential. Eric Boissenot consultant.

James Suckling

A juicy, structured red with blackberries, iodine, spice, and orange peel, with hints of dark tobacco and tea. Medium to full body. Firm, chewy tannins and a structured finish. Give it time to soften and open. Try after 2025.

With touches of spice and tobacco along with its core of red fruits, the wine is medium-bodied, soft and fresh, with an upfront, creamy, sweet, cherry-packed finish. I like the light touch of cocoa that sneaks in at the end too. This will be at its best over the next decade or so. Drink from 2023-2033.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, intense, purple color. Very aromatic, refined nose with pure fruit. Delicate on the attack, very fruity mid-palate, slender in shape; the wine caresses the palate, flavorful with no tannic edges on the finish. Blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Alcohol: 14% – pH: 3.69 – IPT: 75. Yield: 44 hl/ha. Production: 90% of the harvest.

Description

A powerful and fresh red wine from Saint-Julien

The estate

Château Moulin de La Rose owes its name to an 18th century mill on the site where the château is now located. Situated in the midst of the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Julien, the Moulin de La Rose reveals one of the most beautiful expressions of this terroir.

The vineyard

The Château Moulin de la Rose vineyard covers an area of 5.15 hectares. Aged 30 years on average, the vines are planted in Garonne gravel.

The vintage

While the country was confined, the vine was very active in its vegetative development. The particularly dry summer had no negative impact on the vineyard. The fruit, harvested at full maturity, showed a beautiful aromatic concentration, a bright colour and silky tannins. Of very high quality, this 2020 vintage is in line with the 2018 and 2019 vintages.

The winemaking and ageing

Harvested manually, the grapes are sorted in the vineyard before being vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Vatting for around 3 weeks. Ageing in barrels (30% new oak) lasts 20 months, with 7 rackings.

The blend

The Château Moulin de La Rose 2020 is made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon (65%) and merlot (35%).

The tasting

Colour

The wine displays a beautifully deep colour.

Nose

The powerful nose combines freshness fragrances of ripe black fruits, notes of violet and liquorice.

Palate

The generous palate seduces with its tannic structure, as well as its power, supported by a beautiful freshness and a smooth minerality.
