Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Château Nairac 2006
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a pale gold hue with orange highlights. Bright and clear, it is typical of an elegant sweet wine.
Nose
The nose gradually opens to a fragrant bouquet of candied orange peel and mango. With aeration, notes of dried apricot, pineapple, white peach and honey emerge, joined by floral and spicy touches that bring lovely aromatic complexity.
Palate
On the palate, this wine charms with its remarkable balance between sweetness and liveliness. Fresh, dynamic acidity gives the palate an elegant structure, while flavours of exotic fruit, white peach and pineapple unfold harmoniously. The finish, marked by botrytised notes of crème brûlée, candied orange and spiced honey, lingers with great finesse.
Food Pairing
This Barsac is a superb match for foie gras, whether pan-seared or served as a terrine. It also pairs well with white meats in sauce, particularly duck à l'orange, poultry in a cream sauce or spiced pork. Lovers of bold pairings will enjoy it with oysters enhanced by a touch of chilli, or with spicy Asian dishes with sweet-and-savoury flavours. It also elevates blue cheeses and fruit-based desserts.
Serving and Ageing
Château Nairac 2006 is best served at 10–12°C. Decanting for an hour allows the aromatic bouquet to open up fully. This vintage can be enjoyed until around 2040 and will continue to gain complexity over time.
An Elegant, Well-Balanced Barsac
The Estate
Founded in the 18th century, Château Nairac is a Second Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, located in Barsac, in the Bordeaux vineyards, close to the Garonne. Run since 2022 by SCEA Terres Bordelaises (the Helfrich family), the estate has around 17 ha of vines, 8 of which are in production. They are planted mainly with Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
The Vineyard
The Château Nairac vineyard lies on sandy-clay gravel soils typical of the Barsac appellation. Situated very close to the Garonne, it benefits from a microclimate that favours the development of noble rot. The vines, planted mainly with Sémillon and complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, are farmed with respect for the environment and are currently undergoing conversion to organic farming.
The Vintage
The 2006 vintage in Barsac proved particularly demanding. After a hot, sunny start to summer in July and early September, heavy rain fell in mid-September and complicated the harvest. These conditions called for rigorous grape selection and several passes through the vines to pick only the berries affected by noble rot. Despite these challenges, conscientious producers succeeded in crafting fresh, vibrant wines that favour elegance over concentration.
Vinification and Ageing
Château Nairac 2006 was harvested by hand in successive pickings, so that only grapes with the optimal level of botrytis were selected. After pressing, the musts were fermented in oak barrels, around a quarter of them new, preserving the expression of both fruit and terroir. The wine was then aged for thirty months in barrels, allowing it to develop complexity while retaining its characteristic freshness.
Grape Varieties
Sémillon (90%), Sauvignon Blanc (6%), Muscadelle (4%)
