Description
The finesse and aromatic intensity of a Pauillac Grand Cru Classé
The estate
A Classified 5th Growth of Pauillac, Château Pédesclaux was founded under the leadership of the wine broker, Urbain-Pierre Pédesclaux, in the early 19th century. Acquiring the estate in 2009, the Lorenzetti family has elevated it to the highest level by equipping it with state-of-the-art infrastructure. 2014 notably marked the construction of a new gravity-fed winery, designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. In 2018, Manon Lorenzetti took over the reins of the property, dedicating to it her own dynamic energy and passion.
The vineyard
Château Pédesclaux 2021 is a Pauillac wine made from a 52-hectare vineyard that spreads over 19 different terroirs. Since 2019, the vineyard has been converting to organic farming. The vineyard is managed by Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen, advised by the oenologist Eric Boissenot.
The vintage
A mild, rainy winter preceded similar weather throughout spring and summer. Although the vineyard’s proximity to the Gironde estuary and the elevated position of the gravelly hills of Pauillac provided effective protection against the spring frost, the vineyard, which is being converted to organic farming, had to cope with very strong mildew pressure. The rigour of the teams and their knowledge of the terroir enabled them to maintain the vineyard’s healthy condition.
At the end of the season, the alternation between sunny days and cool nights along with water stress helped the ripening of the pips and the evolution of the tannins. These conditions smoothed out the heterogeneity of phenolic ripeness. Considerable work on customised selections along with defining precise harvesting dates at optimal maturity enabled the teams to harvest very high-quality grapes, despite yields being the lowest since 2009.
