Description

The intense aromas of a velvety and elegant great red wine from Moulis

The estate
It was in 2008 that the Cuvelier family, already owners of the Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion Clos Fourtet, acquired Château Poujeaux. Since then, this beautiful Médoc property has experienced a true renaissance. Managed by Mathieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne, with vinifications carried out under the watchful eye of oenologist-consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, Château Poujeaux is today one of the finest references in the Moulis appellation.

The vineyard
Located to the north-east of the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, the Château Poujeaux vineyard is set all in one piece. The vines benefit from an exceptional location on the outcropping Graves de Grand Poujeaux. This great terroir is perfectly suited to the Médoc grape varieties. From this harmony between terroir and grape variety are born great wines typical of the Moulis appellation, offering a great density and elegance.

The vintage
After a mild winter with abundant rainfall, spring was disrupted by numerous stormy and windy episodes. Summer then arrived with scorching temperatures. In September, milder temperatures and some rainy days helped lengthen the ripening process of the berries. At Château Poujeaux, the harvest began on September 25 and ended on October 14 with a very satisfactory result, both in terms of quality and quantity. At the winery, the vinifications took place under perfect conditions, thanks to grapes endowed with great richness and a beautiful aromatic complexity.

The ageing
12 months of ageing. 33% in new oak barrels and 67% in barrels of one or two previous wines.

The blend
Cabernet sauvignon (50%), merlot (45%), petit verdot (5%).

The tasting
Tastes as a wine future, the Château Poujeaux 2019 presents a deep garnet red colour, with shimmering purple reflections. Intensely aromatic, the nose exudes beautiful notes of black fruit combined with more floral fragrances of violet. Aeration reveals mineral notes of flint and smoky notes of cigar box. On the palate, this great red Moulis wine enters the mouth with a supple frame, and gradually evolves a velvety texture with silky tannins. With finesse and elegance, the vintage stretches out on a very long finish with mineral notes and a beautiful aromatic persistence.
