Decanter

The 2018 Clos de Tart demonstrates the superior nature of great terroir and mature vines. This is still a big year with very ripe fruit, but there is more elegance to the grand cru than La Forge de Tarte, the premier cru, and a sophistication that is lacking in the lesser wine. Ripe black cherry and plum fruit with a bit more oak, and some additional mineral nuance, lead gracefully to the powerful but fine-grained texture, impressive density and marvellously balanced finish. Although this does not have the elegance of 2019, it shows how great the ’18s can be with a sensitive hand.

55% whole bunch. Cask sample. Very dark crimson. Not the freshest nose – perhaps because of the slightly elevated serving temperature? But majestic in terms of build and really complex with an array of wild flowers on the nose (a biodynamic effect?). Really pretty smart! There’s a glamour and density here as well as sweetness, digestive biscuits and orange liqueur. Exciting wine. (JR)

The 2018 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was wonderful from barrel, but now it seems to have gone up another level. It has an exquisite bouquet with lovely minerality infusing the brambly red fruit. Wonderful focus and quite profound complexity. You could nose this forever. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins married to a killer line of natural acidity. Everything is perfectly proportioned in this wine, very persistent, with layers of dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and tea leaf on the finish. Immense. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

La RVF

Creamy, deep and polished texture in this rounded, enveloping wine, with a very liquorice-driven finish. The sappy tannic framework and mineral brightness provide energy and a certain sapidity, but it is compact and built for ageing.

Le Figaro Vin

A sparkling, captivating, playful nose—very elegant and fresh, with charming fruit. Plenty of grace and presence on the palate, with lovely concentration and perfect acidity, blue-black fruit intensity, and finely toned tannins. A very long finish.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2018 Clos de Tart Grand Cru opens in the glass with rich aromas of raspberries, plum preserve, ripe berries, warm spices and rose petals, framed by a generous touch of creamy new oak. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's rich, muscular and extracted, with a brooding, introverted profile that will require—and, one hopes, reward—patience. As I wrote last year, this is a powerful, broad-shouldered Clos de Tart that has more in common with the wines of the Pitiot era than it does with what the domaine produced in 2015, 2016, 2017 or 2019.

Description

The expression of a sun-drenched vintage in a great Burgundy wine where power goes hand in hand with elegance

The estate

Clos de Tart is a unique estate in Burgundy, shaped by 900 years of rich history. Today, the Pinault family, known for their passion for historic properties such as Château Latour in Pauillac, carefully tends the lands of the clos. Extensive renovation work has been carried out to showcase the estate's exceptional architectural heritage. Among other things, a new vat room was inaugurated in 2019. This jewel of modernity allows the haute couture winemaking that defines the estate to reach new heights of excellence.

The vineyard

Clos de Tart Grand cru Monopole 2018 comes from plots in the Clos de Tart vineyard, located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The Pinot Noir vines, with an average age of 60 years, are oriented from north to south and are deeply rooted in soils ranging from limestone and clay to stones, gravel and marl. This uniform exposure and complex geology led the owners to divide the clos into 12 different microclimates, each harvested separately. To preserve this precious terroir, Clos de Tart has been farmed biodynamically since 2016 and obtained Biodyvin certification in 2019.

The wine

Clos de Tart Grand cru Monopole 2018 is a Grand Cru Monopole, one of the most prestigious designations. The Grand Cru classification includes only terroirs that produce rare wines. Clos de Tart has the distinction of being the largest Grand Cru Monopole in Burgundy, with vines, some of them a century old, covering 7.53 hectares. The term Monopole means that the land has never been divided through successive inheritances, which is rare in Burgundy.

The vintage

The 2018 vintage began with a very mild winter and spring, apart from a few cool days in March. Nevertheless, budburst came a week later than usual. The mild temperatures were then accompanied by heavy rainfall. These conditions led to early flowering. In June, however, the weather turned very dry and hot and remained so throughout the summer. As a result, picking began early, at the end of August. The fruit was in excellent health, so no sorting was carried out.

Winemaking and ageing

Following the harvest, which took place from 30 August to 3 September, the finest Pinot Noir berries were brought to the cellar for a highly precise winemaking process. The wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 80% of them new, before being bottled in May 2020.
