The intensity and generosity of an irresistible Saint-Julien
Long considered the second wine of Léoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis is now a full-fledged Cru, and one of the greatest wines of the very famous Saint-Julien appellation on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region.
A historical vineyard of the Delon estates, Clos du Marquis became a brand in 1902, the date that marks its very first vintage. The owners wanted to distinguish the terroir of Léoville Las Cases from that of Clos du Marquis, 500 meters apart. The location of the vineyard near the Gironde River favours the optimal ripeness of the grapes, because of the role of the river as a thermoregulator. The soil, rich in organic matter, confers a particular character that is truly unique to Clos du Marquis.
With its blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (72%) complemented by Merlot (27%) and Cabernet Franc (1%), the Clos du Marquis 2017 reflects the attention and precision of the technical teams in both the vineyard and the winery. The Clos du Marquis 2017 reveals the brilliance and purity of fruit on an intense and gourmand aromatic palette. On the palate, the powerful attack shows off the personality and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, while the elegant tannic structure reveals a flattering and silky touch in the mouth. Supported by a beautiful acidic structure, the finish ends with a persistent length, highlighting the complexity of wine. Distinguished, brilliant and full of charm, Clos du Marquis 2017 is a great Saint-Julien wine.
Wine Advocate-Parker :
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored and composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Clos du Marquis gives up gorgeous notions of crushed plums, blackberries and cassis with hints of chocolate box, pencil lead, menthol and lavender. The palate is medium-bodied, very finely crafted and refreshing with firm yet fine-grained tannins, great intensity and a long, mineral-laced finish.
