A Priorat white wine of remarkable mineral complexity

The estate

Founded in 1979 by René Barbier on the steep slopes of Gratallops, the estate Clos Mogador is an iconic figure in Catalonia. It embodies the rebirth of the Priorat appellation. This French pioneer transformed an abandoned region into one of Spain’s most prestigious, spearheading a collective movement as early as 1989 alongside other visionary winegrowers. Now run by René and Christian Barbier, the estate farms its old vines in a natural amphitheater of black “llicorella” slate, benefiting from an exceptional microclimate. The wines express intense minerality and a remarkable capacity for aging, the distinctive signature of Catalan terroir.

The vineyard

The Priorat vineyard covers 5.8 hectares, farmed according to the principles of regenerative viticulture. The vines are planted on llicorella soils, the black slate emblematic of the appellation, at an altitude of 350 meters.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage was marked by extreme conditions, with successive heatwaves and significant drought. Despite this challenging context, the vines were able to draw on their reserves, and north-facing parcels helped preserve an unexpected freshness. The vintage’s sunny character shows through while maintaining remarkable balance.

Winemaking and aging

Nelin 2022 benefited from a short skin maceration inspired by the old brisats. Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts in 1,200-liter oak foudres. Aging of this Spanish wine continued for 12 months in foudres, followed by an additional 6 months in stainless-steel tanks.

Grape varieties

Nelin 2022 is made from a blend of eight local grape varieties: garnacha blanca, macabeo, pansal, picapoll, cartoixá, trepat blanc, cariñena blanca and pedro ximénez, sourced from four small organic vineyards.
