A Spanish Reserva from Rioja Alavesa with complex aromas and a velvety texture
The estate
Founded in 1879 in Haro, CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) remains a family-owned La Rioja company run by the fifth generation of the founding descendants. This pioneering winery stands out for its remarkable architectural innovations and recently incorporated Bodegas La Val in 2023, strengthening its position as a benchmark in the production of Rioja wines.
The vineyard
The grapes used in the production of the Viña Real Reserva come mainly from the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa, notably from the municipalities of Laguardia and Elciego. The vines, over thirty years old, are bush-trained on sometimes terraced plots with soils that are predominantly calcareous and low in organic matter. Viticulture is practiced without irrigation, respecting the region's ancestral traditions.
Winemaking and aging
Hand-harvested grapes. After a pre-fermentation cold maceration, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature between 28 and 30°C with pump-overs and rack-and-return. The Viña Real Reserva 2018 then undergoes 18 months of aging in new oak barrels and one-wine barrels, with manual racking every four months during the first year. A minimum of one and a half years of aging in bottle in the Viña Real cellars precedes its release.
Grape varieties
The blend is made up of 90% tempranillo complemented by 10% garnacha, mazuelo and graciano.
