Description
Find three expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in an exceptional case
The producer
Founded in 1968 by Al and Boots Brounstein, Diamond Creek is a true gem of the Napa Valley. Indeed, thanks to the visionary spirit of these two pioneers of modern viticulture in California, the estate was quickly recognised for its ability to magnify the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. Now owned by Louis Roederer, a French Champagne House known for its love of precise wines and terroirs, Diamond Creek works every nuance of Cabernet Sauvignon into single-varietal wines that have earned a reputation for excellence.
The vineyard
Located in California's Napa Valley, Diamond Creek covers 20 hectares of vineyards. In order to best serve the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, Al and Boots Brounstein divided the vineyard into four plots: Volcanic Hill, Gravelly Meadow, Red Rock Terrace and Lake.
The wine
Diamond Creek is an estate founded on the idea that different soils can give a unique expression to each wine. With this philosophy in mind, the Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 case was created. It features three Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the 2017 vintage and from three plots on the estate:
- Gravelly Meadow 2017
- Red Rock Terrace 2017
- Volcanic Hill 2017
The vintage
The 2017 vintage is characterised by a start to the year with heavy rainfall, followed by a mild spring which resulted in prolonged flowering with little bursting. The wines of this vintage are known for their elegance with the expression of great aromatic complexity.
The vinification and ageing
Gravelly Meadow 2017 is harvested from a 5 hectare plot of brown, stony soil. The wine was then aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak.
Red Rock Terrace 2017 is harvested from a 7 hectare plot of iron-rich red rocky soil. The wine was then aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak.
Volcanic Hill 2017 is harvested from an 8 hectare plot of light, mellow and ashy soil. The wine was then aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak.
The blend
Gravelly Meadow 2017, Red Rock Terrace 2017 and Volcanic Hill 2017 are all made from 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
The tasting
Gravelly Meadow 2017 embodies a mineral wine driven by complex scents of dried blackcurrant and herbs. Developing flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, spice, black liquorice and cedar.
Red Rock Terrace 2017 offers beautiful aromas of cocoa, dark berries and stone. The structure is soft and supple and works beautifully with the flavours of black cherry, spice and dried herbs. The finish is very persistent.
Volcanic Hill 2017 embodies a remarkably complex and well-defined wine with powerful tannins. Carried by expressions of blackberry and plum, mixed spices, mocha and espresso flavours, this vintage is incredibly attractive young and will age gracefully.
