At once powerful and crystalline, this densely structured dry riesling is made for the long term. Extremely lemony and salty on the medium- to full-bodied palate, then so compact at the very long, driving finish, which is as pointed as a rapier. The last riesling harvested in this vintage, but with the lowest alcohol and the highest acidity. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

The 2022 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is a “bucolic” site, Humbrecht says, surrounded by forest and fields at altitude. It is on rocky Triassic limestone. The wine is slightly flinty and nutty on the nose. The palate is stony, too, taut and bright but flowing like clear spring water, cooling, with ever more citrus coming to the fore. Lemon zestiness and lovely brightness make this mouth-puckeringly tangy and deliciously thrilling. (Bone-Dry)

La RVF

Sumptuous volume and fleshy depth in the riesling from Clos Windsbuhl, a digestible wine with radiant length, full of potential and very much in line with the great vintages of this terroir.

From Hunawihr, this Riesling shows just 12.46% alcohol and 2 g of residual sugar. Muschelkalk terroir, a limestone that is less incisive than Oligocene. The subtle bouquet reveals many facets, with nuances of mint, apricot and sweet spices, complemented by a mineral touch. Lively and saline on the palate, this Clos Windsbühl benefits from a firm backbone that ensures its straightness, yet it still shows generous, mouthwatering substance. A beautiful bottle that deserves a little patience.

Picked very late in the middle of September, the 2022 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Riesling offers a very deep, rich and intense, lime- and limestone-driven bouquet that is very distinctive, rich, coolish, fresh and citric. Round and generous on the palate, this is a powerful, complex, very mouthwatering Windsbuhl Riesling with the generosity and finesse (also in terms of acidity) of a grand cru and a lemon-fresh (and bitter) finish. The wine is wide and juicy but also refined and fresh in all its minerality. It is also really rich and potent yet not at all driven by alcohol. The salinity is great here and intertwined with tannins and noble bitters. 4,400 bottles. 12.46% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Riesling "Clos Windsbuhl" 2022 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Tasting notes

Colour
The glass reveals an almost translucent golden-yellow hue, illuminated by delicate silvery glints.

Nose
The bouquet opens with restraint before revealing beautiful complexity. It first releases aromas of mirabelle plum and white peach, underpinned by a chalky minerality. With aeration, notes of lemongrass, ginger root and sea spray emerge, followed by hints of linden blossom and wet slate.

Palate
The attack reveals a taut structure and vibrant intensity. The acidity, incisive yet velvety, guides the wine with architectural precision. The palate, of medium power and perfectly dry, is dominated by a saline minerality and citrus flavours. The texture combines suppleness with crispness, offering an exceptionally long, compact and deep finish.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs beautifully with seafood, such as pan-seared scallops or langoustines served with a light curry and mango sauce. It also enhances dishes based on porcini mushrooms, white fish with Asian spices, orange-glazed pulled pork, as well as poultry in rich sauces or matured cheeses.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Riesling "Clos Windsbuhl" 2022, it is recommended to serve it between 10 and 12°C in large glasses. Several hours of aeration or decanting is advised to release its aromas. Endowed with an exceptional structure, this wine is built for very long ageing and can develop in the cellar until around 2052.

Other characteristics

This wine is perfectly dry, with a minimal residual sugar level of 1 to 2 g/l. It has an alcohol content of 12.5%, a pH of 3.3 and a total acidity of 3.8 g/l.

The elegance and mineral precision of a great Alsace wine

The estate

Born in 1959 from the union of two winegrowing families, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is a true benchmark in Alsace. Located near Turckheim, the estate spans around forty hectares across exceptional terroirs. Today, the domaine is run by Olivier Humbrecht, Master of Wine. A pioneer of viticulture that respects living ecosystems, he led the vineyard towards official certification in the early 2000s. The domaine stands out for its commitment to producing terroir-driven wines, favouring low yields and absolute quality.

The vineyard

Clos Windsbuhl is a historic monopole located in the commune of Hunawihr, in Alsace. This high-altitude terroir, reaching 350 metres, covers around five hectares on south to south-east-facing slopes. The vines flourish on a very fine and shallow soil, composed of shelly limestone, clay and chalky rock. This cool climate allows for slow ripening of the grapes. The current riesling vines come from a grafting carried out in 2021 onto rootstocks over thirty years old, benefiting from deep, well-established roots.

The vintage

2022 was overall a warm and dry year. However, the vineyard benefited from timely rainfall at crucial moments in the growing cycle. This opportune rain helped avoid water stress and ensured a slow, optimal ripening, giving rise to concentrated, luminous grapes.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes for the Riesling "Clos Windsbuhl" 2022 are harvested late. In the cellar, fermentation proceeds very slowly thanks to indigenous yeasts, continuing until the following summer to reach a fully dry profile. Ageing takes place in large oak foudres with extended contact on full lees, without any additions, in order to preserve the wine's full complexity and integration before bottling.
