The aromatic expression and richness of a great white wine from the Languedoc
The estate
An emblematic figure of French winemaking, Gérard Bertrand is the current owner of Château La Sauvageonne, an estate with a volcanic character that he acquired in 2011. Located in the Languedoc, this property embodies the vision of this former rugby player turned true pioneer of biodynamics. With a deep commitment to preserving biodiversity and ecosystems, his group now manages the largest biodynamic-certified vineyard in the world. The estate stands out for its environmental approach, producing wines that reflect the harmony of their terroir.
The vineyard
Located in the Languedoc, the vineyard thrives at altitudes ranging from 150 to 350 metres. This distinctive terroir is marked by a complex geological heritage, made up of phonolitic schist, sandstone, and mineral-rich red soils known as "ruffes," all resting on a clay subsoil that retains summer moisture. The vines benefit from exceptional temperature swings, with warm days and nights cooled by air currents from the Larzac plateau. The entire estate is farmed according to biodynamic principles, having earned Demeter certification back in 2015.
The vintage
2023 offered particularly favourable climatic conditions for the vine's growing cycle. This ideal weather allowed the grapes to reach perfect ripeness, making it one of the finest years of the decade for the estate.
Winemaking and aging
The creation of the Château La Sauvageonne "Grand Vin" 2023 involves meticulous care, with methods tailored to the profile of each grape. The Grenache Blanc is vinified in tanks to preserve all the freshness and delicacy of its aromas. The other grape varieties, on the other hand, are aged in barrels, a technique that lends them greater roundness, volume, and additional aromatic complexity.
Grape varieties
Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Roussanne, Viognier.
