Description

The richness and fruity framework of a Puglia red wine

The estate

The history of the Gianfranco Fino estate is the story of one man's dream. At the time specialising in olive oil production, Gianfranco Fino wanted to embark on a new venture: producing his own wine. In 2004, he bought a 1.3 hectare vineyard in the province of Manduria, in the heart of Puglia in southern Italy. Growing exclusively Primitivo (Zinfandel) grapes, this plot is distinguished by its old vines aged between 50 and 90 years. Organically farmed and based on the precepts of biodynamic viticulture, this estate produces great Puglian wines that are recognised far and wide for their finesse and complexity. Gianfranco Fino now oversees a 21-hectare vineyard, which now includes plots of Negroamaro, a grape variety typical of the region.

The vineyard

Salento Negroamaro "Jo" 2020 from Gianfranco Fino is a Puglia wine that stems from a plot of 2 hectares located at 90 metres of altitude. Managed according to the Guyot method, the vines flourish on a clay-limestone soil at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare.

The wine

With a name that evokes the sea surrounding Salento, "Jo" is a wine that captures the depth of Negroamaro. Its name, a diminutive of "Jonico," recalls both this imposing sea and the region's iconic grape variety.

Winemaking and ageing

Hand-picked, the grapes are carefully sorted on a table. After destemming, they begin their fermentation for 2 to 3 weeks at a regulated temperature. The wine is then aged for 12 months in oak barrels, before being bottled for a further year of ageing.
