Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Nerina 2022 Girolamo Russo
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a beautiful straw yellow hue, characteristic of Mediterranean high-altitude white wines.
Nose
The bouquet opens with seductive marine notes, underlining its volcanic and coastal terroir. It then reveals aromas of ripe tropical fruits, harmoniously blended with Mediterranean herbal scents such as thyme and sage.
Palate
Full-bodied and round, the palate offers a beautiful balance between fruity sweetness and vivid mineral freshness. It unfolds flavours of yellow apple, lemon, lime and jasmine, supported by crystalline acidity. The finish is long, clean and free of bitterness.
Food and wine pairing
This Italian white wine pairs wonderfully with seafood such as raw oysters, grilled shrimp or lobster. It also complements delicate white fish such as sea bream or sole, as well as light-sauced dishes like seafood risotto or creamy poultry preparations. Fresh cheeses, such as ricotta or young goat cheese, also make excellent companions.
Service and storage
To fully enjoy its aromatic profile, this Nerina 2022 should be drunk until around 2026.
Other characteristics
This wine benefits from organic farming certification, guaranteeing environmentally friendly practices and the absence of synthetic products. It also stands out for its blend of several local varieties, in contrast to the regional trend of single-varietal cuvées.
The minerality and elegance of an Etna white wine
The estate
Founded in 2005 in Sicily, the Girolamo Russo estate was born from Giuseppe Russo's desire to pay tribute to his father. A former pianist and doctor of literature, Giuseppe took over the family land located on the northern slopes of Etna in Italy to develop quality viticulture there. Now heading the estate, he cultivates 18 hectares of vines using organic farming. The estate stands out for its respectful approach to the volcanic terroir, producing authentic wines that actively contribute to the international renown of this region.
The vineyard
This Etna Bianco wine comes from vines planted between 650 and 780 metres in altitude on the northern slope of the famous volcano. The terroir is characterised by sciara, a complex soil composed of solidified lava flows, ash and basaltic rocks. The plots, spread across several historic contradas, are home to vines, the oldest of which date back to 1924. Grown using organic farming, the vineyard benefits from significant temperature swings between day and night, promoting optimal berry ripening while preserving their natural freshness.
Winemaking and aging
The design of the Nerina 2022 is based on a minimalist approach aimed at letting the terroir express itself. After hand-harvesting, fermentation occurs spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts, at controlled temperatures. It takes place mainly in stainless steel tanks, as well as in barrels that have previously held several wines. The wine is then aged on its fine lees for around six months in these same vessels, giving it a fuller texture, before undergoing light sterile filtration prior to bottling.
Grape varieties
70% Carricante, 30% Catarratto, Inzolia, Grecanico, Minnella and Coda di Volpe.
