Wine Enthusiast

C.P.

From 23-year-old biodynamically farmed vineyards—and from arguably Australia's most famed Riesling producer—this reveals heady yet delicate aromas of lime leaf, lemon, white floral and talcum powder—with a stony, mineral undertow. It pulses on the bone-dry palate, driving a straight line down the tongue with racy acidity and chalk-dust texture. A multifaceted wine now, this most classic Clare Riesling could age in bottle for well over a decade.

Reticent of aroma, yet the coil of acidity underpinning this wine is juicy rather than hard as I have often found it in the past. A workout in the glass reveals green apple, Asian pear, anise, spa salts and chalky pungency. The ripeness is on point. Properly mid-weighted, forceful of extract and dutifully long. This will age well across the mid-term, as its track record attests. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Jancis Robinson

Max Allen

Made from a six-hectare block of Riesling in Watervale, planted in 2000 on ‘thin topsoil made up of red loam over limestone, and, atypical for this subregion, slate bedrock’. A riot of fresh fruit aromas – juicy green apples, snappy green grapes, some heady quince – lead onto Springvale’s usual eager-to-please lime-juicy richness, finishing with mouth-watering acidity – perhaps tighter and more pronounced than in previous, warmer vintages, but in lovely balance with the rest of the wine. Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for Grosset’s Springvale Riesling 2023

Tasting

Appearance

The wine shows a clear pale yellow hue, highlighted by silvery glints.

Nose

The bouquet reveals lovely aromatic complexity with notes of white pear and spring flowers. Hints of sweet spices reminiscent of saffron and curry leaf bring an exotic dimension to the nose. There are also aromas of fresh citrus fruits such as kaffir lime, lime and grapefruit, alongside mineral touches of chalk and flint.

Palate

The attack is fleshy while remaining highly precise. A silky texture combines with a sharp, chalky minerality that gives structure to the whole. The palate displays fine fruit concentration, balanced by a chiseled, juicy acidity. The saline, lingering finish extends the tasting with elegance, revealing remarkable aging potential.

Food and wine pairings

This Riesling is an ideal match for grilled fish, fresh seafood, delicate Asian preparations, or fish-based dishes. Its vibrancy and minerality make it a versatile companion for light, refined cuisine.

Serving and cellaring

Springvale Riesling 2023 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 8 and 10 °C. This wine has outstanding aging potential and can evolve through around 2033, developing greater complexity over time along with subtly petrol notes.

An outstanding Australian Riesling from Clare Valley by Grosset

The estate

Founded in 1981 by Jeffrey Grosset, the Grosset estate has established itself as a benchmark for Australian Riesling. Jeffrey Grosset, still at the helm, notably farms the Springvale vineyard, a 6-hectare parcel planted at 460 meters above sea level on red loam and schist soils. A pioneer of organic viticulture in the region, he vinifies on a parcel-by-parcel basis by clone and vine age, favoring a non-interventionist approach. His Rieslings, acclaimed worldwide, combine crystalline purity, finely chiseled minerality and remarkable aging potential, embodying Grosset’s winemaking excellence in Southern Australia.

The vineyard

The Springvale vineyard covers 6 hectares at 460 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in the region. Facing northeast, the 23-year-old vines grow on red loam and slate soils over a limestone base. Planted at a density of 2,500 vines per hectare, they are made up of three Riesling clones, two of German origin and one French. Farmed under certified organic practices, the vineyard benefits from a climate with 600 mm of annual rainfall and requires no irrigation.

The vintage

The 2023 vintage stands out for a broader, more exotic expression than previous years. The climatic conditions made it possible to obtain grapes of great purity, offering remarkable balance between richness and tension. This year encouraged the development of generous substance while preserving the freshness that is characteristic of this high-altitude terroir in Clare Valley.

Winemaking and aging

The harvest is carried out by hand. After destemming and gentle pressing, Springvale Riesling 2023 is vinified in stainless-steel tanks with neutral yeasts. Parcel-by-parcel vinification respects the differences between clones and vine ages. The wine then rests on lees for 2 months. Unfined and lightly filtered, this Riesling thus preserves all its authenticity and purity of expression.

Grape variety

This Australian white wine is 100% Riesling.
