The balance and aromatic expression of an Australian red wine by Penfolds

The estate

Founded in 1844 by Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, the Penfolds estate has, over the years, earned itself an international reputation for its sublime, powerful red wines. The prestigious magazine, Wine Enthusiast, honoured Penfolds as their 2013 New World Winery of the Year, the Penfolds estate had already established itself as an icon of fine Australian wines at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to Mary Penfold’s unparalleled determination and will to make exceptional Australian wines.

When Max Schubert became part of the Penfolds' story in the 1950s, he instilled the elegance of fine Bordeaux wines, that fascinated him greatly, into the estate's wines. Success shortly followed when the cellar master produced his famous Grange wines, which crossed Australian borders in order to win the hearts of wine lovers from all around the world.  Today, the talented Peter Gago has taken over this role.

The wine

Made only in great vintages, Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon by Penfolds is the perfect expression of the great Coonawarra terroirs, a region renowned for its "terra rossa", clay soil covering limestone soil. 2018 is the third vintage of this exceptional wine, first produced in 1973, then in 2008.

The vinification and ageing

This Southern Australia wine has aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% of which are new) with fine grains.

The blend

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The tasting

Colour

The 2018 Penfolds Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has a vibrant garnet red colour.

Nose

Intense and seductive, the nose reveals a rich aromatic palette blending fruity and aniseed fragrances with subtle notes of black olive, oak, tea leaves and dried porcini mushrooms.

Palate

Balanced and delicate, this wine will invite you on a journey. Fruity aromas (raspberry, cranberry, redcurrant, rhubarb, pomegranate, blackcurrant) are combined with delicious flavours of Italian ham, cedar and spices. While tasting this wine, a beautiful acidity is combined with firm tannins, a great aromatic richness and an exceptional length.

Storage

This fine Australian wine can be kept until around 2040, enabling it to reveal its full aromatic richness.
