For over 180 years, The Dalmore has embodied the pinnacle of Scottish single malt excellence, captivating connoisseurs worldwide with the richness, depth, and masterful balance of its creations.
A centuries-old heritage at the heart of the Highlands
At the source of a legend In 1839, visionary Scottish entrepreneur Alexander Matheson founded The Dalmore distillery on the majestic shores of the Cromarty Firth, north of Inverness. This choice of location, in the heart of the Highlands, would forever shape the House’s identity.
The rise and renaissance of a great House
In 1867, the Mackenzie family took the reins of the distillery, injecting fresh impetus into its destiny. Despite the trials of the First World War and the devastating fire of 1920, The Dalmore rose from the ashes. In the 1960s, acquisition by the Whyte & MacKay group propelled the distillery to new heights, transforming its production capacity and earning it a place among Scotland’s most prestigious names.
“Dalmore,” a historic name
The name Dalmore has Gaelic roots: Dail (“field”) and Mòr (“great”) combine to form “The Great Field.” This designation evokes the distillery’s deep anchoring in the vast, fertile lands of the Highlands, facing the Black Isle peninsula.
A unique creation process
Nobility of raw materials Excellence begins with the rigorous selection of first-class malted barley, ensuring the House’s signature aromatic richness. Pure Highland water, drawn at the source, is the vital element that shapes the very soul of the whisky.
Goldsmith-level distillation
The Dalmore reveals an exceptional distillation process: a rare setup of eight stills, both small and large, creating a unique spirit of remarkable complexity and aromatic depth. This richness forms the ideal foundation for very long maturation—truly a hallmark of the House. Thanks to this exceptional profile, the spirit lends itself to extended aging and a far wider variety of casks than most other whiskies.
Mastery of time
The distillery has forged a global reputation through the use of rare and precious casks from the prestigious González Byass bodega in Andalusia. This exclusive partnership, woven over more than a century, guarantees exceptional casks that previously held sherries aged over 30 years.
The art of blending: Richard Paterson, a whisky legend
Once maturation is complete, the different cask types are expertly married to give birth to the range’s expressions. Embodying the House’s blending artistry, Richard Paterson—nicknamed “The Nose”—is a true whisky legend. With over 50 years of experience, this Master Blender is regarded as one of the greatest whisky creators of his generation.
