James Suckling

This has always been a very refined and polished vintage port with medium body, lovely sweetness, very fine tannins and a long, long finish. It has always been like this. Drink now.

Paleish red-brown. Currant, fresh herbs, coffee and mellow wood tones on the slightly shallow, evolved nose. Offers an attractive mid-palate sweetness but comes across as quite light, finishing with slightly drying tannins and a sugary, caramel-like quality. Faded with air. “This has been on a plateau for the last 20 years,” noted Seely. I’d drink it over the next ten years.

Now, here’s a wine you don’t see every day. It wasn’t the most concentrated Port I’ve ever tasted. But the incredible sense of purity in the fruit was overwhelming. It was as if all the fresh, sweet, bursting cherries, orange and figs had just been picked from the tree. Add in beautiful notes of licorice, dark cocoa, raisins, and sweet, warm, spiced fruits. I’m big on style and character, and this has both.

Description

A Full-Bodied, Well-Balanced Vintage Port

The Estate

Records mention the name Quinta do Noval as early as 1715. António José da Silva, a merchant in the port of Gaia in Porto, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894, after it had been devastated by phylloxera. His son-in-law, Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, later launched an ambitious programme to restore the vineyard. Most notably, he widened the narrow dry-stone terraces that shape the landscape of the Douro vineyards. Revolutionary at the time, this approach made better use of space and sun exposure. Painted with lime, these white terraces remain a distinctive feature and a source of pride for Quinta do Noval, an iconic benchmark among fine Portuguese wines.

The Vineyard

This wine comes from an exceptional terroir, where outstanding soil and a unique microclimate combine to create ideal conditions for producing great Port wines. On the south bank of the Douro, in Portugal, the Quinta's 138 hectares of vines, aged between 30 and 40 years, grow on schist-influenced soil at altitudes ranging from 130 to 350 metres. The climate is dry and marked by extremes of both coolness and heat.

The Wine

The “Nacional” plot at the heart of Quinta do Noval is home to ungrafted, phylloxera-resistant vines that embody the very soul of Portuguese terroir.

Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes are foot-trodden to obtain the must, then macerated in lagares, the Quinta's traditional stone tanks, to ensure optimal extraction of aromas, colour and tannins during fermentation. This Vintage Port is aged for several months in wooden casks in the climate-controlled cellars of Quinta do Noval before bottling.

Blend

This Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional 1964 is a blend of local grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão, Tinta Roriz,  ….).
