The elegance and smoothness of a Vintage Port

The estate

As early as 1715, records mention the name Quinta do Noval. António José da Silva, a merchant at the port of Gaia in Porto, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894, after it had been ravaged by Phylloxera. Subsequently, his son-in-law Luiz Vasconcelos Porto implemented a substantial plan to renovate the vineyard. In particular, he widened the narrow, dry stone terraces that shape the landscape of the Douro vineyards. Revolutionary at the time, this method made better use of space and sunlight. Painted with lime, these white terraces remain a unique feature and source of pride for the Quinta do Noval estate, an emblematic reference for fine Portuguese wines.

The vineyard

Vintage Port by Quinta do Noval stems from an exceptional terroir located on the south side of the Douro River in Portugal. Quinta do Noval reigns over a 138-hectare vineyard. The vines are 30 to 40 years old and are poised between 130 and 350 metres above sea level. The soil is composed of schist and the climate is dry, characterised by extreme coolness and heat.

The wine

Quinta do Noval only declares exceptional harvests as Vintage Port. Renowned for their balance, harmony and elegance, these Vintages are the fruit of an exceptional terroir and a rigorous selection of the best wines in the final blend. Comprising three different plots in the Pinhão Valley and one plot in the Roncão Valley, this Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2020 represents 7% of the production.

The vintage

A hot and dry year, 2020 is marked by a long and gradual ripening period during the summer season. The harvest was particularly early, and was carried out on in a plot-by-plot manner based on the ripeness levels of the grapes.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are crushed to obtain the must and then macerated in lagares, the Quinta's traditional granite vats, to ensure the optimum extraction of aromas, colour and tannins during fermentation. The wine is aged for 18 months in wooden barrels in the air-conditioned cellars of Quinta do Noval before bottling. The choice to keep a slightly higher-than-average sugar level in this vintage provides the wine with a rare richness.
