Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a garnet hue with purple highlights, clear and brilliant.
Nose
The bouquet opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry and sage, accompanied by notes of fresh black fruits such as blackberry and black cherry, with a delicate touch of violet. Refined nuances of vanilla and oriental spices mingle with toasted and chocolatey accents.
Palate
The palate reveals a medium-bodied structure, with supple, rounded tannins that offer a creamy texture. The balance between fruit and oak is remarkable, enhanced by fresh acidity and subtle milky notes. The finish lingers with flavors of crushed black pepper, sage, graphite and sweet spices, showcasing fine aromatic complexity.
Food and wine pairings
Macán Clásico 2022 is a perfect match for grilled red meats, herb-roasted lamb, slow-cooked dishes in sauce, as well as aged hard cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
Macán Clásico 2022 is best served between 16 and 18°C, opened one hour before serving to allow it to fully express itself. This wine offers aging potential through around 2036.
A Tempranillo from La Rioja combining fruit purity and elegance
The estate
Created in 2009, Macán was born of the prestigious alliance between Vega Sicilia and the Rothschild family. The vineyard spans 97 hectares, patiently acquired between 2001 and 2009. Run by Ignacio Calvo de Mora Brito Cunha, under the leadership of Benjamin and Ariane de Rothschild as well as Antonio Menéndez, CEO of Vega Sicilia & Rothschild, the estate features ultramodern 10,000 m² facilities inaugurated in 2017. This unique partnership unites Spanish excellence with Bordeaux know-how.
The vineyard
The vines of Macán Clásico 2022 are planted in the Sierra de Cantabria, in Rioja, on terraces at 483 meters above sea level. The poor, gravelly, clay-limestone soils are home to vines averaging 32 years of age, offering ideal conditions for the expression of Tempranillo and Grenache.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage proved to be a triumph in the face of unfavorable weather conditions. Despite the challenges encountered, the warmth and ripeness of the year yielded grapes of beautiful quality. The first harvests began on September 11, giving rise to a wine that reflects the fruit purity sought by the estate.
Winemaking and aging
Macán Clásico 2022 was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, followed by a further 18 months in bottle before release.
