Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A seamless red, with a satinlike feel on the palate that enmeshes supple tannins and carries a core of dark fruit — ripe blackberry, currant and boysenberry — laced with a fragrant range of underbrush, cigar box, sandalwood, licorice root and vanilla. The flavors expand and amplify through the long, long finish. Drink now through 2042. 500 cases made.

Zekun Shuai

El Carretil is often the more minerally, structured, and powdery red from Artadi. This wine is al dente, reactive, melted, and polished. It is deep with vibrant fruit, and the finish is long and stony with a mineral grip. Tasted twice, once blind against some other single-vineyard bottlings from Artadi, including El Pison. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Description

A full-bodied and refined red wine from Rioja

The estate

The bodega Artadi was founded in 1985 by winemakers from localities around Logroño with the ambition of producing great Rioja wines, a wine-growing area located in the north of Spain.

Under the direction of the visionary oenologist Juan Carlos López de Lacalle since 1992, the bodega quickly gained international renown. The quality of its wines is recognised by many critics, including Robert Parker, who has awarded several cuvées the much-coveted score of 100/100.

The vineyard

The Artadi bodega oversees an 80-hectare vineyard located in Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa region. Situated at 630 metres above sea level and composed of old tempranillo yielding low but very qualitative yields, this Spanish vineyard is managed using organic and biodynamic farming practices.

The wine

El Carretil 2022 from Artadi is a Rioja wine from a 3.64-hectare vineyard. Planted at 500 metres above sea level in Laguardia, these vines planted in 1930, 1975 and 1988 rest on clayey loam soils with a high content of carbonate and active limestone.

The vintage

A mild and particularly rainy winter gives way to a more clement spring, promoting homogeneous budding. The warm temperatures recorded from mid-May precede a very hot summer. The harvest begins on 15 September in a very healthy vineyard.

Vinification and ageing

Manual harvesting followed by a rigorous selection of berries. Cold maceration in open vats for 24 to 48 hours. Fermentation for 10 to 12 days accompanied by light daily pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation in demi-muid, giving roundness and structure. Ageing for 10 months in French and Austrian demi-muid, followed by an additional 6 months of ageing in foudre.

Blend

El Carretil 2022 from Artadi is a 100% tempranillo.
