Vinum

Marked by smoky notes and an herbaceous, spicy edge, jasmine blossoms, citrus fruits, peach; a creamy palate, round, soft and very opulent—almost like two mouthfuls of wine in one—ripe fruit, a slightly austere finish with a stimulating bitter note on the finish, lingering on grapefruit aromas. Impressive, powerful, ideal as a food wine.

Decanter

Round and alive in the mouth, glossy, rich but really kept in check with a citrus tangy acidity. Subtle wood in the background has more of a creamy touch than a smokey spiced aspect. A very nice Valandraud Blanc this year - there’s an element of purity and delicacy still with ripe peach, crisp apple, buttery pineapple and some mango too. I love it. Ending salty and mineral as well. Lots going on here, really a great construction and an exciting wine to follow as it was before. 17% Sémillon in the blend - twice as much as usual.

Honeysuckle, white peaches, lemon rind, pineapples, tangerine, and pears create the aromatic profile. The palate delivers its layers of sweet, citrus, white peaches, and ginger with all their bright, crisp, round characteristics with ease. The wine blends 55% Sauvignon Gris, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Semillon. Drink from 2027-2037. 96-96 Pts

Lime blossom and lime leaf, white peaches, so much depth here, a gentle unroll, keeps you waiting, delivering tension and graphite texture as it goes, opening to quince, papaya and lemongrass. Higher Sémillon than usual because of such a great year for this variety, aged in amphora, with no oak for the Sauvignon Gris, 70% new oak overall. 3.12 pH. Harvest September 4 to 9. Jean-Luc Thunevin's final full harvest to be overseeing the wine, as he has now sold the estate to Marie and Jean-Christophe Lefévère of Château Sansonnet.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Blanc de Valandraud 2025

Tasting

Appearance
This wine reveals a particularly bright greenish-yellow colour.

Nose
Intense and pure, the aromatic bouquet stands out for its great subtlety. It unveils notes of honeysuckle and white flowers, harmoniously blended with fruity aromas of fresh pineapple, white peach, apricot, pear, mandarin and lemon zest.

Palate
The attack is broad before evolving towards a smooth and rounded mid-palate. The whole offers a precise balance between beautiful aromatic richness and great freshness. Flavours of lemon, white peach and ginger intertwine, bringing a delicate exotic touch that stretches into a very elegant finish.

Serving and cellaring

Blanc de Valandraud 2025 shows excellent ageing potential and will be ideally drunk between approximately 2027 and 2037.

An exceptional Dry White Bordeaux signed by Château Valandraud

The estate

Created in 1989 by Jean-Luc and Murielle Thunevin, who are still the current owners, Château Valandraud is an essential reference in the Bordeaux region. Starting with a small plot, this Saint-Émilion estate now extends over 10.7 hectares. Thanks to a meteoric rise and a constant quest for excellence, the property has established itself as a true mark of prestige, achieving the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 2012.

The vineyard

The vines used to produce this Dry White Bordeaux cover an area of 3 hectares within the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse. With an average age of 15 years, the vineyard benefits from a south-westerly exposure on hillsides with clay-limestone soils, fostering beautiful minerality and great freshness.

The vintage

The 2025 vintage benefited from an early start to the growing season thanks to good water reserves and a favourable spring, offering the cool terroirs dedicated to whites ideal conditions to preserve delicate balances and naturally low pH levels. The harvest, more classic than for the reds, began on 4 September with remarkable consistency. The cool limestone soils played a key role in the tension and freshness of the wines. In order to enhance the aromatic brilliance of the Sauvignons and to refine the plot-by-plot ageing, the proportion of terracotta amphorae was increased for both whites.

Winemaking and ageing

Ageing on the lees with bâtonnage lasts 8 months. It takes place 70% in new oak barrels and 30% in terracotta amphorae, a proportion increased this year to preserve aromatic brilliance. Alcohol content: 15% vol.

Grape varieties

This wine comes from a blend of 45% Sauvignon Gris, 38% Sauvignon Blanc and 17% Sémillon.
